1995 850 Turbo Manual Engine Swap

Post by dtmmoore2 »

Can I swap the original B5234T for a B5234T3 (not sure yet if it's coming from an automatic or manual S70) keeping the 850's original intercooler, turbocharger etc.? If not, is there anything that could be done to make this possible? I am thinking that "the drive-by-wire which was added starting with the 1999 model year, replacing the traditional throttle cable arrangement with an Electronic Throttle System (ETS); also added was coil-on-plug ignition, replacing the distributor and hi-tension spark plug leads" might mean some modifications would be necessary. So far I only have the opportunity to buy the T3 engine itself Am I right to assume that the T3 is slightly torquier and delivers a little more hp?

Thanks for any advice.

Automatic vs manual will not matter.

If the S70 donor is a 98, then the B5234T3 engine is exactly the same as the B5234T in your 850. There may be differences in smog equipment (EGR and SAS) that you can choose to retain or alter at this time.

If the S70 is 99 or 00, then the engine has VVT and there are some other, minor differences, however many people have swapped that in to an 850 but it requires some modifications that I am not familiar with.

Thanks for the information. Would be interested to know what exactly are the modifications required for this, what other car parts are required to complete the swap and what to look to possibly replace at the same time.

99 and later engine would be a problem. You would have to use your existing cylinder head. The head is different to accommodate the CVVT on exh cam. You can't remove CVVT unit and substitute your cam gear since the opening in head for cvvt and the front of cam are different.

The accessories are totally different on 99-00 & will require different fittings like power steering hoses, a/c hoses and temp sensor connectors. One knock sensor tapped into the block on 99-00 only. Cam sensor pickup is different.
Cam has a different drive system on the end for sensor. And then of course the uncontrolled CVVT.

Do yourself a favour and use the original 850 head.

Those guys know way more than me about this so I would heed their words ... to add, there are dozens of threads over at Volvospeed about swapping in later engines, many different ways to skin this cat, you may want to go there and look around.

Here is a good starter thread http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/16 ... -rn-swaps/

Try doing a Google search "rn swap site:volvospeed.com"

Thanks for this info. Assuming it's a B5234T3 from the 1998 model year, what's an easy way to distinguish it from a later one. I am hoping it's as easy as seeing that there is still a throttle cable arrangement still attached to the engine. If not, apart from taking pictures from all angles of my original engine and bringing them along to compare to the newer engine, what should I look for since I would be buying it from a wrecker who I am fairly certain does not have a record or know what model year it came from, just sees the sticker on the timing belt cover. Is there an engine identification number somewhere on the engine that indicates what model year it belongs to?

98 will have throttle on end of intake with hardware for cable throttle. 99 and later will have the throttle facing down in center of intake. The t belt cover is flat on 98 like on your current engine. 99 and later will have a noticeable bump out in front of cam(s) to give clearance for the CVVT unit(s).

Is this a reasonable swap to attempt?

You will need a new ECU as 99 is ME7 in the US, probably Canada too.
