1993 960 INSTALLING replacement gear shift knob?

I found a few posts asking how to remove the shift knob from my '93 960 wagon, done, removed. But how to properly replace it with the new knob?

New knob fits back on the shifter but the button will not depress, its already depressed. Is there a trick?

Okay, figured it out: use the old rubber shift knob like a mallet and whack the new one until it *pops* on and the button pops out. Whew.
