2000 V70 Which steering wheel fits?

Post by kennta »

Hi
I´ve searched the forum but I can´t find a good answer.... (only that the s60 s.w. throws a code about the stereo and the airbag is of another sort...)

My steering wheel is sticky and disgusting so I want to change it. I have changed the stereo to one thats supports steering wheel-buttons.

Questions
Is there another volvo steering wheel with buttons and a similar airbag I can change to? (Should also fit 850, S70 and so on.....)

I also don´t know the facts about airbags but depending of the importance I guess it should be possible to fit whatever steering wheel I want and remove the airbag and replace it with a resistance? Please let me know if this is a good idea.

Thank you in advance

Those are very good questions and I'm not sure that you will get a certain answer. You are correct that the steering wheel airbag can be eliminated and the system can be tricked with a resistor but, assuming that the drivers of the car are of average size or taller, the airbag seems to help in the event of an accident so keeping it would be a plus. My bet is that most of the steering wheels are interchangeable but I have never had an opportunity to try it. I have had the steering wheel off of a couple of 850s and a S70 but not at the same time. From memory, everything looked the same as far as the bolt and the splines.

Needless to say you need to proceed with caution when doing anything with the airbags and don't try to resistance test them. The voltage presented from some ohmmeters can actually trigger the bag.

I´ve read somewhere that the steering wheel from v70 N will fit but the airbag is somehow different. Something about "two chambers" or "splitted in two" and my airbag has only one.

Anyhow the car wont recognize the airbag and throw a code.... worst case scenario is of course that it deploys while someones driving.

I need more on my feet before I take action.

The C70 wheel with leather/wood trim will suit your V70 if it's a P80 series.

Perhaps look for a nice one of those....

Resistance on seat airbags is close to 2 ohms (though I've never taken a measure; just put an 850 seat in place of a torn up '99V70 seat) I used 3 x10 ohm resistors in parallel to the connector heading back to the SRS module and it worked to extinguish the SRS light in the '99 V70.
