I'm having a radio code issue which I believe is a little out of the ordinary. A shop powered down the radio while doing some work and when they hooked it up, they called the dealership and got the code to unlock it. They put in the code and…nothing happened. No error, no confirmation. The code just stays on the screen and nothing happens.
I got the car a couple months ago and this is the first time the radio has been powered down while in my possession. The previous owner said they hadn't replaced the radio, but I don't know about the owner before that. The code I have from the previous owner matches the one the shop got from the dealership, and it is also written on the radio itself. I have every reason to believe the code is correct. If I enter any other code than this one, it flashes EEEE and prompts for the code again. When I enter my code, nothing happens and I can't even power down the radio without shutting off the car. However, I can power it down before entering any codes, but then it won't turn back on until I turn the car off then back on.
The shop put a different radio in and it functioned as expected, so the issue seems to be in my radio unit. They also tried the 'leave it powered for 2 hours' reset that you do when you enter the wrong code three times, but that didn't chance anything.
I read about a process of turning on the car, turning off the radio, then holding preset buttons 2 and 3 for 10 seconds until it displays a scrambled code, which you call in to Volvo for an unscrambled code, which you enter with your seek buttons. I held 2 and 3 and nothing happened.
Currently, I have the radio out of the car on the chance that leaving it completely powered down for a while might help it reset somehow.
Has anyone encountered this? Anything else to try? I'm driving cross country in a week and would be nice to have something to listen to.
**To moderator: feel free to move to Volvo Audio board if that is more appropriate.

I assume you mean that it is a different radio than the one that came originally installed and thus the code would not be the one originally attributed to my VIN? That is of course a consideration, but the fact that the code I have is the only code that causes this "freezing" behavior, plus the fact that the code I found handwritten in my manual (which matches the one derived from the dealership via the VIN) is written on the radio unit, lead me to believe that it is the correct code for my particular radio unit and that something weird is happening in the radio.AVIP wrote:Could be a different radio than what was actually installed

Correct
Take a picture of the radio sticker and email it to me
On some radios the long serial number is stamped into the metal and not on the sticker, make sure I get that long number too and I will get you the correct code.
If that proves to be the same code, those EEEEEs (error) means it's shot

Email sent. Just to clarify, the EEEE's pop up when I put in a random code. When I put in what I believe to be my code, the code stays on the screen and nothing happens at all. Aren't the EEEE's the normal response to an incorrect code?

Yes, when I intentionally put in a wrong code I get EEEE. When I put in what I believe is the correct code, the code stays on the screen and nothing else happens.jimmy57 wrote:On those radios wrong code gives the EEEE display. I think your head unit is done.
IS it a single disc unit?
It has the input for the CD changer, but I don't have a CD changer connected.

JRL, it's clear you are quite vast in your Volvo knowledge, and even more willing to go out of your way to help people.....but give the guy a day or 2 to respond before publicly complaining about no appreciation. I wish people would answer my questions immediately, but I know not everyone that may have the information is online at that time.
