2001 v70 Interesting recessed area on backs of rear seats

Post by packetfire »

On the backs of the fold-down rear seats on my 2001 v70 2.4T, there are solid plastic panels about 3 inches high that run across the top from side to side.

One of these plastic panels fell off for no apparent reason, revealing that it was held in place by a pair of springs on thin plastic rods that extend from the edge of the "inside" of the plastic part.

The void revealed in the back seat looks like it is intended to hold a cylindrical thing - perhaps a window-shade-like cargo cover? An alternative to the large vehicle-width cargo cover? Any ideas?

Photos below. I have no idea why they load upside-down! Must I start with upside-down images to get rightside-up photos?

1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!
