1997 850 Cranks no-start. MVSOLVED crack in distributor

Post by fdelponte »

I have a 1997 850 base model. I'll provide the symptoms first and, then, a list of my unsuccessful attempts to correct the problem. The problem started after I stopped for gas. I left the gas station drove about a mile and parked. When I returned to the car it would not start. I assumed I was the victim of bad gas. I had the car towed home, added dry gas and the car started. Thinking the problem was solved, I changed the gas filter and topped off the tank with fresh gas. The car ran fine for a few days.

After a couple of days, I started noticing a slight hesitation. Eventually, the car would not start again. There is a strong gas smell and the car appears to be running rich: the plugs are dry and black. When I do get it started, after lots of cranking and peddle pumping, it sputters and misfires. I've replaced the following, TPS, MAF, Fuel Pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter, fuel Pressure regulator, spark plugs -- also, recently replaced ignition switch, and PCV breather system.

Yesterday, I decided to clean the new plugs, they were black again, and the car started. It ran perfectly. I turned it off and restarted it several times. I went for a short trip and then returned home and parked. An hour later, the car cranks but won't start. It will occasionally turn over for a second. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks in advance for your help.

the parts you used are all new ? I would try replacing the coolant temp sensor.. it could be telling the ecu the engine is cold and dumping too much fuel.

Yes... All new parts. I'm getting a little too familiar with the FCP Euro reception area. I can give the coolant temp sensor a try... Thanks

Update. Problem solved. I found a hairline crack in the distributor. Just a reminder to always pay close attention to the basics.
