2000 V40 replaced plugs, now won't fire cyldiners 1 and 2
I know the first thing everyone will say is make sure you plugged everything back in correctly. I did, I promise. I have been having trouble with a 3rd cylinder misfire, so I decided to replace the plugs (cheap stuff first, right?). Then the car wouldn't start at all, looked like splash fouling of the plugs was happening. Cleaned the plugs, inspected the coils, the plug wires from the coils, wiring harness, etc. Same problem. One of the plug wires was damaged but still delivering power, replaced it as it was not perfect, problem persisted. Replaced one of the two coils mostly to just test if that was the issue and it made no difference. I have tried numerous combinations of the old wires, new wires, old coils, new coils, old plugs, new plugs, with no success. Did a compression check, came back 200, 200, 190, 190. Looks good. Checked the ignition wiring harness with a multimeter and it looks like power is making it through over to the VVT solenoid and to all clips. I also pulled the spark plug wires out, put a good plug in them and checked to make sure they are actually firing, which they are. Still though, cylinders 1 and 2 will not fire and car will not run. I have also cleaned the idle control valve.. Just about to lose my mind.. Any suggestions? Any other ways to eliminate possibilities?

Ok you have power to the coil packs however have you multimeter tested continuity to all the other wires of each connector to the coil packs tracing back the harness to an early point?
There will be a break on the loom at some point. Each coil pack's voltage is provided in pulses from the engine computer. Some designs switch one of the 12V leads back to ground to provide potential in order to provide a pulse.
In this case a circuit diagram of your S40 would show what is provided to each coil pack. A noid light which detects 12V pulses may be next on your shopping list.

Happened to me last week (I have a 2003 Volvo V40). Replaced spark plugs and plug wires (after getting misfire check engine codes). The car started but the engine was running very rough. Then, the car would not start at all. Check the basics: gasoline was coming, I got sparks to each plug. After some search, the answer was quite simple - I have mistakenly connected wires to wrong coils.
The correct order should be: 1 to 4 and 2 to 3.
