1999 S80 T6 Oil leaking from front of pan

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 S80 T6 Oil leaking from front of pan

Post by astouffer »

Hello all. My car has developed a nasty oil leak and it appears to be coming from the front of the oil pan near the dipstick tube. I had to use some of that oil dye to track it down. Oil was all over the pan and was blown back to the frame and even got on the timing belt (which I plan to change) making it difficult to trace. Anyhow it doesn't look like the leak is coming from the pan gasket. It appears to start slightly higher by the dipstick and what looks like a ground strap bolt. All the pan bolts were pretty tight.

Before this I took the intake off and replaced the flame trap even though the old one was nearly empty and the ports were clear. The very short bottom hose on the flame trap had dried crud around it but nothing fresh. There is no smoke or pressure coming out of the dipstick tube either.

Any common problems in this area?

Check if your camshaft seals are leaking, this is often a side effect of clogged PCV. Since you mentioned that you got oil on your timing belt, I suspect you may have the same problem as I do. Remove the timing belt cover and check for oil.

Everything PCV related was completely clear, nothing was blocked. I suspect its the seal around the dipstick tube and ordered a new one. Meanwhile the steering rack has started leaking from the boot on the drivers side. If stop leak doesn't fix it then I'm getting rid of this car. Replacing the rack would cost like 1/2 of what I paid.

I also have a leak from high pressure power steering hose. Yes, there is a reason why these cars usually go for cheap. :)
