1986 740 gle B 230F no fire, help

Post by Corey »

I have an 86 740 gle non-turbo, 4 cyl. I ran it off in a snow bank, got it jerked out and it was running fine, idled a couple of minutes and died, all fuses are fine, ignition gets fire to the + side of coil, but no fire out of the coil, changed coil, no joy. In the past this thing has died while idling but always starts back up after a few seconds, cap and rotor look good. There are three wires in the plug to the distributor, which one goes back to the coil, and which ones are hot ect? Could this be computer prob? Any help would sure be appreciated.
Thank you,
Corey

Thank you for the info, I hope for some more. Of the three wires going to the distributor blue, red, black, the red tested hot with key on, the blue fires injectors when grounded, the black shows to be grounded. with the wires connected to the distributor as it turns over the injectors are firing but still no fire from the coil, tried different coil, no joy. When testing the wires going to the amp, #1 and # 4 are hot with key on. Could the computer at pass side kick panel be the prob? Any info or advice would sure be appreciated.

I know you said you aren't getting spark, but to run for a short while after being pulled out and then stalling it makes it sound like you ran out of gas.....fuel pump quit. Could the snow bank have knocked off wires that run to the pump?

Thought of that, checked wires, they're good, coil doesn't spark at all, not even a tingle. Is there any chance that there is a reset somewhere?

Are you checking for the spark at the distributor end of the HT lead? Is that lead OK?

After the checks you have done further checks are more complicated, but most can be done by DIY, if a multi-meter is available.

Which engine is fitted to the car and which ignition system?
