2001 V70 AWD axle damage from accident?

Post by STAGE III »

Okay, I apologize in advance I am sure this is a no brainer but having never had an AWD Volvo and this car is so clean I just have to ask if there is a chance of it being safe and salvagable please.

So I called on a 2001 V70 AWD Cross Country (non turbo) car. LOOKED great in the pictures in the ad PRIOR to the wreck and still LOOKED decent in person despite the busted tire and rim in the cargo area, cracked headlight, loose bumper cover and had been sitting up since it went sliding off the road in the snow across bricks from a mailbox base I was told.Basics: 140k miles, timing belt changed at 105k

I brought ramps due to the owner saying there was a BAD oil leak but it had NOT been driven low on oil (was towed and then just parked). Oil cooler box was compromised but not torn off,the drivers front control arm had a small twist to it on the end but there was also a chunk 3"x2" out of the "frame" that runs side to side basically under the front seats under the vehicle. The factory spare did not scrub the wheelhouse and there was no sign that the full size factory wheel and tire had in anyway impacted the wheelhouse even from the accident.

Topped off the oil, inflated another tire, installed battery, car started right up.Had a little skip but had been parked so unable to determine due to short period it could be run with the oil leak (yes, I am sighing myself as I type this and realize there are just too many red flags even as beautiful as the interior and paint are but I will continue in case this helps someone else with an individual issue rather than this boatload).

Okay, car was running with a little skip, cut off once but came back on and stayed on (injectors clogged? Tune up?, Was run without oil after the accident? Who knows). I dropped it into gear and it acted like the E brake was on. Nope brake off, increased the throttle and finally something made an audible snap sound and it was driveable not sure if the AWD axle was in a bind or brake somehow was locked up. I couldn't drive it far due to the oil situation but could feel the front end (control arm and spare?) had issues.

As bad as this all sounds the car can probably be purchased for scrap value after I was able to show the owner what a huge risk and money pit it could potentially be for me. My gut is saying "Don't walk....RUN!!!" but I saw the info on changing control arms on this model and it is not bad, that chunk out of the "frame" may not have affected anything else, the rough running engine may just need to be driven with some fresh fuel and the oil cooler box is not a big project.OR as my wife would say it could be a total pile of junk LOL (she be the smart one! lol)
I guess the one thing that scares me the most is the impact that drivers front wheel sustained and in hours of searching V70 AWD I could not find anything specifically addressing such an impact and diagnosing potential hidden internal drive damage (there are no tell tale scrub marks as previously mentioned or bright visible spots to axle to indicate rubbing but again it was parked and I was only able to drive it down the street and back).

Sorry to ramble on so long, I have been waking up late at night trying to figure out how I could possibly make this work out since I am out of work but trying to piece something together for our family. Under normal circumstances I would say "No way, send it to the junkyard" but I figured I would at least run it by those who have experience with this model and possible similar situations.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Kindest Regards,

John

Sorry for the long rambling question on this vehicle . I know it is a ton to digest and about any one of the cars issues would be a reason to walk away from it .
I talked to the owner again last night and we may just do some horse trading for an item I have that he is interested in. My trade is paid for and as I told him, worth a little more than the salvage value of the wagon. So if he accepts the offer and it turns out I can't revive the wagon I can junk it myself and not be over expo$ed.

As I said before the hit to the drivers wheel with AWD is my largest concern if anyone has thoughts on just that issue.
Thanks,
John

DO YOUR RESEARCH
It's a 2001, a not so hot a car to start with, strike one.
It's been wrecked, strike two.
Pass, Pass Pass!
