My catalytic converter needs to be replaced. Has anyone had good success with aftermarket cats?

Yes. I got a new system with a Bosal cat and Starla muffler and pipe from FCP for a non-XC, non-turbo '98 V70 for about $640 a while back. The Volvo equivalent at the time would have been closer to $1300. Then again, the OEM Volvo system did last for 15 years. I doubt I'll be getting 15 years out of the aftermarket replacement. XC system could be pricier if it has the double rear mufflers/tailpipes, but I would see what FCP has on offer as a first resort. My replacement system does hang slightly lower in the rear than the original did so that the tailpipe is not as nicely positioned in the bumper cover cutout as was the original. This was all within the last year or two.

P.S. I just passed NJ inspection, which does test exhaust gases, this past weekend.

If you have a scrap metal recycler near you, save the spent OEM cat. I turned mine in for scrap and, if memory serves, got about $70 bucks for it given the precious metals content. My mechanic would have just given it to his scrap guy if I hadn't asked for it.

You might want to check into DEC brand. I've heard mixed reviews but when I called to talk to them they were easy to talk to and sounded like they'd work with me if I had issues. I ended up having a used Volvo Cat welded in.

Yes- magnaflow.
They are just releasing a downpipe with cat for those cars. I have been welding them in but you need a 45 degree pipe extension as the volvo cat turns the corner going up to the manifold and you will be cutting that part out.
