2000 v70xc Need a new motor - what years work?

Post by pbob42 »

Bad rings on my 2000 v70xc T5. I believe I am limited to a 1998-2000 T5. What are my best options on a used motor? Costs? Suggestions? Thanks

I think you will need to stay 1999+ unless you are comfortable dealing with electronic throttle system integration. Post 1998 cars went to the new engine management system too, of course.

the name "T5" refers to models that came with the high-pressure turbo engine. the XC came with the low-pressure turbo engine, also found in 97+ "GLT" cars and some (all?) non-XC AWD cars.

i don't know what is compatible, but be careful with the nomenclature - you could end up with a headache on your hands if you buy the wrong engine.

This excludes the 'R' though right? 1999 & 2000 V70R's had a HPT I think.

Yep, all R models have the HPT engine.

There are several options from 99+ that will work for OP, including either an HPT (and its turbo) or an LPT, but for exact years etc I am not well versed enough in 99+ cars to advise. You need Mike (precopster) or Lee or someone else to chime in, hang around they will find the thread ...

For a drop in replacement you need a '99 or a 2000. The '98 LPT has different accessory mounting and you would need to fabricate mounts and do some drilling and tapping to get your power steering, alternator, and A/C compressor to mount correctly. Mike has done it, and he has some pictures that detail the modifications, but it is a bit beyond the capabilities of most DIY types.

There are numerous other small differences (Ignition, PCV, oil cooling, etc) that I think are fairly easy to deal with but it complicates things.

The 2000 model has slightly different tappet design using shims instead of hydraulic tappets. When you remove the spark plug cover you'll see a bunch of torx screws that screw into the aluminium top half of the head. This identifies the shimmed tappet heads.

However because both the '99 & '00 LPT engines use VVT they are interchangeable.

If you retain your 2000 head by repairing it you COULD use an earlier LPT block mated with the 2000 model sump with inbuilt oil cooler. The carrier points on the earlier blocks require 2 extra holes for the accessory bracket and one for the fuel line.

As far as compatability you can go all the way to 2002 LPT engines. The 2000 to 2002 engine is a B5244T

I can dig up the photos if you go that way.
