The shift lock is locked up and can not be moved without using the over-ride button. Any ideas how this happened and how it can be fixed? HELP!!!

Either your need a shifter microswitch, the solonoid OR a brake switch.
The brake switch controls to shift interlock and is the most common (and the easiest to fix) to fail

On my 98 v70, I also needed to override the shiftlock until I eventually realized the problem was in my ignition switch which needed to be replaced. I noticed that my lights were not coming on when I started the car and once I fiddled with the ign switch, the lights would come on and I could shift into gear without the override.

The ign switch problem is evidently a common one with Volvo's at the 100k mark or so. In fact, this same problem with the ign switch (causing the need for a shiftlock override) had also happened with my wife's 95 850 at virtually the same mileage.

Once bitten, twice shy... as they say. :D
