1999 S70r poor running MVSolved - bad ground

Post by b2fkb0 »

Well, last week I was prepping for Carlyle. Just finished adding the k24 and a custom rip. Image
She was looking good! Took her out on a 10 minute drive and the turbo oil feed line burst, causing total oil loss...in a mile I lost all my oil before realizing something was wrong. My motor seized...
Image
The small hose I used to make my feed line failed. Boy was I ticked after hours of work! But I should've known better; oh well there's that 01 t5a at the local Lkq...
Last Saturday we went and grabbed it!
Image
After 5 hours to pull it, 2 more to clean it I had the new heart ready!
Image
After another 10 hours the new motor is prepped (new tbelt etc and rms), the stuck motor is ready to be pulled!

Image

I missed Carlisle this year but hopefully I'll be able to swing it next year!

Holy smokes! Catastrophic engine failure!

Sorry about your loss, but you're obviously good enough with engine pulling/prepping to get a new motor installed. Glad the job is in good hands. I wish I could be there to learn/help/document this transplant.

Questions: the small hose, were the clamps not tight enough? What was your first indication of failure? Loss of power? Or sound? Or oil light?

Hi Matt
I flared the steel line on both ends and then used quality clamps. The hose I used burst in the middle
Image
My own darn fault as I grabbed the best piece of hose I had (marine grade fuel hose). It wasn't heat rated. I had little to no warning; the engine lost power and I saw a cloud behind me looked down and the dash oil light was lit, my pillar gage was at zero, as I went to turn the key off there was a little squeak and that was that. I lost all the oil in less than a mile in about a minute. You're welcome anytime! There's plenty of room and my wife is a good cook!

I wouldn't had thought to use a rubber hose for that part. On the turbo mods I've done I have stuck with all metal line and compression fittings on the pressure side. Rubber for the return line though.

Fuel hose, fuel injection hose, vacuum hose, silicone hose, oil cooler hose, coolant hose, etc, are all specific to the application they called for.

Sorry you have to find out the hard way.

I just go to AZ and get some 3/8" brake line and some brass compression fittings. Only tools you would need are standard wrenches, tubing bender and tubing cutter. This was on a Isuzu diesel.... I don't know if the lines were american or just close enough to allow the fitting to tighten onto it. That's the only issue I could for see though- metric/odd sized lines.

Yep I solved it for the new motor; all steel stock s60r line. The 01 motor accepts this line without modification! Every hour I reflect on this project that there is no skimping or quick fixes...

I feel for you, after doing all that work I would be so pissed. You have a patient wife to allow you to spend so many hours on your car

I have garage envy. I used to have a house with a detached two-car garage, but I moved. Do I ever miss it!

I'm lucky that my wife understands my hobby! I built this garage; I appreciate the positive comments. My son and I put the new engine in last night and I'm buttoning her back up! Road ready pretty soon...
