2000 S80 Tie Rod replacement vs Rack & Pinion
2000 S80 Tie Rod replacement vs Rack & Pinion
Recently had a run of bad luck in which both inner tie rods are damaged and must be replaced. In Nov, the driver side ball joint failed 48 hours after it was looked at. When the Dealership finished the repairs to my car they said that the left inner rod was slightly damaged but still safe to use. Fast forward to Feb, I'm driving down the Highway at 75 mph when I run over two snowboards that destroyed my entire cooling system and multiple unknown items underneath. Firestone is no telling me that both inner tie rods are now bad and need to be replaced, understandable. However he suggests doing the entire rack & pinion system because in his experience it fails shortly after the inner tie rods do. Is there truth in what I'm being told or is he trying to hustle me into something I don't need?

Agreed, if the rack is not noisy, doesn't bind or leak, leave it alone.
