Are you trying with a 1/4 inch drive set, a nice long extension paired with a shorter one and do you have some universal joints?
That is a very tight area and I can't see access being easy without that type of tool. A 3/8 inch drive is usually too bulky to get through.
I owned a 960 and remember that the accessory bracket needed to come off for intake manifold removal however I didn't replace the thermosat housing until the head was off and in pieces.

Lack of pressure may be something more serious like a head gasket breach. Best way to find out is grab another thermostat and hollow out your old one (removing it won't work as the thermostat helps the housing seal)
You'll be able to get flow if the old one was restricting flow. If not the impeller may have just broken off. These aluminium heads don't like too much heat. Did it overheat just once?
