2000 S70 GLT SE "ticking/knocking" sound in engine
Please someone tell me I can fix this. I have noticed a ticking sound in the engine once it warms up. Yes, it increases with revs, but I can't pinpoint it. I do need to replace the engine coolant temperature sensor, but I hope I didn't run the car too hot for too long. Any help would from you fine folks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Get a long handled screwdriver or mechanics stethoscope and poke around to isolate the noise. Did your car overheat? Did the sound start after that? Need more info.
I see 245K miles. That's a lot of mileage, so it may be simple wear and tear. Any other symptoms, and how long have you owned the car?

It's actually quite common in these cars. Some point to the oil pickup being clogged others point to o rings which require you to drop the pan and is a lot of labour
I'm going to try to run the engine for 10 min or so with 1l of auto trans fluid to clean any blockages

Hydraulic lifters. Very common. When u hear it, put the car in neutral or park and rev to 2500 rpms for about 30 seconds to a minute it should distribute the oil over the lifters and stop it for a while. Add a can of lubromolly anti friction from IPD in to the oil next oil change and should really help. Also switch to synthetic and will cut it down a lot.

I know it sounds stupid but I had a loose spark plug which created a loud knocking sound.
Worth checking.

Nothing sounds dumb when it comes to me turning wrenches, especially on this car. To amplify some of my earlier info, the car has been in the family since it was born and has been meticulously maintained. It did overheat one time when the sensor died and locked the thermostat closed. I tried isolating the sound and have at least narrowed it down to the top half of the engine, I think. I put some Marvel Mystery oil in today along with an oil change and the sound is still there. Maybe something to the oil pickup being clogged? I will keep at it but while the noise is still there, what damage is it doing to the engine? I'm about to turn it over to my son who is not very mechanically inclined yto say the least. Thanks again.

A thicker Viscosity for a high mileage car should help or eliminate it. Being in SoCal (sorry Florida) you can use a heavier weight all year round. Have used all the products. (exc. Rotella T 15W-40).
