1998 S70: Will not start

Post by EVN91 »

Hello family,

I purchased a 98 S70 a few years ago for my first car. I must confess that I have very limited automotive knowledge but I am hoping that I can learn some things as I am a relatively competent learner.

It has been out of service for a year as I could not renew my license plate sticker as I was unable to pass emissions due to an old oxygen sensor; I believe. I went out and bought a new group 48, 730 cc battery as the previous one I had taken out and installed into a Corolla I no longer own. Now when I connect the battery the car does not power whatsoever when I insert the key. The car was worked on by a mechanic who is no longer around. I will attach photos to this post so you can better visualize what I'm working with. The battery seems too big for the tray and there are two wires (see image) which I cannot seem to find the purpose for and where they connect. The fuses also seem to be out of order (see image) and some may be missing, maybe this is why the car stays dead? Also, there is a misplaced valve that I am unable to figure out the place for. If anyone could help me figure out how to get it started so I could take it and get the oxygen sensor installed I would be very grateful.

That red bundle of wires has to be connected to the positive terminal, it has a tab on it that has broken off. Wedge it into the space on the pos clamp then tighten it down and voila! Your car should start. The other harness goes to the cruise control pump under the battery tray. If you have jack stands and an open end 22m wrench you can replace the o2 sensor yourself in ten minutes.

As was said, the bundle of wires goes to the positive terminal but from your picture the mounting stud is still there and all you need is a nut and a washer that fits on the threaded stud to bolt the wires down properly.

Hey Osman,

You're awesome! Got the car running. Now my problem seems to be that the cooling fan stays on from the moment the car is started and then for a few minutes after the car has been turned off. There is also a clicking sound but I cannot pinpoint the location it's coming from. Maybe I need a new timing belt? I will post a new thread and attach a video and ask for further help. Thanks.

ECT sensor is bad your car turns the aux fan on when it is bad. It is under your thermostat and housing 17mm I think maybe 19mm open end wrench.

I had this happen to me before the female end of the wires breaks so it cant be refastened to the same spot without some soldering or modification as I suggested.
BTW the big hose in 3rd pic goes to airbox from front of car near fan shroud.
