So I have been the proud, and bewildered owner of a Volvo for less than 24 hrs... In all honesty, I bought the car because it would accommodate the wheels I bought for a Thunderbird I junked a couple years ago, well that's not the full extent, because it's a pretty cool car, but that's what got the wheels turning as it were...
In any event, in the short time I have had my 97 859 T5, I have had to address a handful of issues, (a busted radiator inlet, a trans stuck in winter mode, a sporatic idle, and failure to start, either turning over without starting, or not starting at all). That being said, each and every dilemma was circumvented by way of the wealth of knowledge already present on this board, and as of this moment, I have not invested even one additional dollar. That's not to say I won't eventually have to buy some parts, but so far, nada...
The process has not been without some confusion, as there are obviously some variations in the perceptions of other people's problems. However, by way of the process of elimination, and starting with the best case scenario, I have yet to encounter any issues with this car that could not be better understood by parusing the threads contained herein, and I am grateful, so thanks for existing.
Because I'm a newb...

...when circumstances permit, the Swedish Volvo gods ask that you tithe MVS in the amount of your chosen value. I tithe 10% of what I save in labour here , by example.

Indeed,
MVS is the best. Good people, non-existent attitudes and everybody is more than glad to help. When I got my S70 I had no experience with Volvos. Now 12 months on I can say that I know quite a lot about my make and model and I have sorted A LOT of stuff on my car thanks to MVS. So yeah, pony up a few bucks to the boys on the next fundraising drive. Oh, and welcome! Make sure to sort your timing belt asap if it has not been done.

I think you've frightened him. He hasn't posted back in a month.abscate wrote:...when circumstances permit, the Swedish Volvo gods ask that you tithe MVS in the amount of your chosen value. I tithe 10% of what I save in labour here , by example.
Maybe he found a new car for the Thunderbird wheels.
There were some answers for those original issues, but the 10% thing should not scare you, only dealership mechanics.

Hurry up and tithe 10%, because it's soon going up to 20% (thanks, inflation).

Swedish entities need money. (Don't they all?)
Alright. Edit: I own two, so my sins are doubled.

This site has saved me thousands, not to mention keeping My beloved T5 on the road and probably off to college next year. The car that took the kids from toddler naps to college.....fawesome!

Make no mistake, I appreciate the insight that I was able to pull from in order to familiarize myself with what was by all means an unfamiliar vehicle. And if I'm being honest, of all of the resources that were made available by google, this forum seems to be among the most comprehensive, if not the most.
That being said, if I were going to "tithe" as you say, I'd do so of my own volition. Sticking the collection plate in a person's face as soon as they hit the door might not be the best way to solicit funds, it certainly isn't going to compel me... admittedly, my nature is contrary.
I have since posted regarding the ongoing issue with my 850, feel free to ignore it, if the lack of financial consideration on my part thus far renders me unworthy of any assistance. I have never done well in religious circles, perhaps my failure in that respect is universal.

If MVS was a pay-to-play style resource, it wouldn't have a few hundred thousand posts. As it stands, .7% of users are donors (financial) .7% of users are MVS Contributors, which denotes either a documented write-up writer or PayPal donor (or both), so there wouldn't be a whole lot of answers around here. That calculation comes from the total number of registered users -- 55974 -- over the 12-year lifetime of this MVS forum software instance.
If you donate, that's wonderful. If you document something about your Volvo and share it here, that's just as great, if not greater. If you don't do anything, that's fine also.
The last thing I want is this site to be thought of as a paid site. MVS is absolutely free, as in free beer. I thank people for joining not because there's financial incentive, but because it means they're one more node in a big information set about Volvos.
Sorry if I'm coming off as defensive. I just want to clarify that principle of MVS.
