"Factory" setting, I don't know. But it can be reset to various values, the maximum being 12k miles IIRC. I had this value set around the year 2001 at a Volvo dealer in Seattle.

IIRC the 1998 model year was an oddball that required the service light be reset by a dealer or software at least - before and after it can be reset by the operator.

Qualifies for the Department of Obscure Information if in fact true.

OM Sez:

Service reminder indicator

This light will come on at 10,000 mile (16,000 km) intervals*, after 750 hours of driving or after 12 months, whichever occurs first. It is a reminder to the driver that the service interval has been exceeded. The light will stay on for2 minutes after the start until reset by the servicing retailer.
* Turbo-charged model intervals: 5,000 miles (8,000 km), 500 hours of driving or after 12 months, whichever occurs first.

BKM,

What have you got in mind?
Is your SERVICE light presently on?
Do you want to examine what your limits are?
Do you want to change your limits?
Or do you want to raise your limits so the SERVICE light never comes on?

If yes to any of last 3, do you have an ELM327 device?

Is your SERVICE light presently on? I was hoping soon but it was reset by Indy sometime late last year
Do you want to examine what your limits are?If possible
Do you want to change your limits? Would be curious on how to do so
Or do you want to raise your limits so the SERVICE light never comes on? Now, perhaps lower so it would come on sooner

If yes to any of last 3, do you have an ELM327 device?

BKM,

I had no idea you could get a wireless ELM327 (for PC / Android / Iphone / iPad / iOS) for under $20.

I have never heard of the AST 5408. Is it an old tool? Possibly circa or pre-dating the DRAPER Reset Tool? Seems to be very little info about it on the net.

I noticed doing an eBay search that some of the SRS & Service Light Reset tools can also set the Service Light Reminder (SLR) limits. Maybe your AST 5408 will do that. Maybe it will be able to lower the SLR limits to your desired settings and you will not need to use the ELM327 for that purpose.

However, I'd be surprised if the AST 5408 can change the SLR limits to **ANY** value which fits in the ECU 51 (COMBI) B805, B807, and B809 requests. Please let us know if it can or can not.

I know from experience while testing volvo850diag that the '97 850 SLR limits can be changed to *anything* you please:

- ECU 51 B905 range: 1000 - 255000 mile or km
(in increments of 1000)
- ECU 51 B907 range: 0.25 days - 16383.75 days (ie, 44+ years)
- ECU 51 B909 range: 1 - 65535 engine hours

I'd guess that it works similarly in the '98 S70. I'd be surprised if you were not able to change its SLR limits to anything in those ranges (barring possibly the "dealer required initially" constraints that abscate seems to recall for any car that had never had the Service light reset by the dealer during its initial years).

Case #1: SLR limits can be lowered to very low values.
Last week, gmh demonstrated to me that his '97 850R calendar time SLR limit, ECU 51 B907, could be lessened to 1 day (value of 4) and trigger the SERVICE light to come on upon the next engine on (since the corresponding 6-Hour Periods since Last SERVICE Light Reset counter, B906, had already been incremented to 40-50 days, way beyond the new, temporary 1 day limit).

Case #2: SLR limits can be raised to the maximum of their range.
I've successfully changed all my limits to their maximums. In particular, my SLR mileage limit has been changed to a value of 255000, far beyond the 12000 figure that Matthew recalled as the maximum. Admittedly, most any typical tool will not have the ability to set a mileage limit to the non-standard 255000, since that effectively would override the SERVICE Light Reminder function (as far as mileage is concerned), but I'm telling you the '97 850 COMBI *does* allow this limit to be changed to the full scale of its range. I've done this quite a few times while testing volvo850diag. Such a capability -- to change all the SLR limits to their maximum or close to their maximums -- is a function which *is* useful to us that are otherwise prone to smash the SERVICE light. By using the SLR reprogramming facility to semi-permanently disable the SERVICE light, hopefully you can retain the ability to do a simple SLR reprogramming back to the original value if the car is ever sold. That way you don't have to reinstall a replacement SERVICE light or inform the new owner that the SERVICE light does not work.

So, BKM, what specific values do you want to lower your SLR limits to? Pick anything in the ECU 51 B905, B907, B909 ranges listed above.

P.S. If you ever reprogram your SLR limits to non-standard values, I'd suggest you reprogram those limits back to their original values before you take your vehicle in for a dealer scan of the COMBI. Otherwise, you might freak them out. They're liable to suggest a replacement of the COMBI or some such non-sense.

The ELM327 from AMAZON works with the 98 Volvo and the 02 CRV. It is a WIFI Unit but the AP is not fully functioning and not in real-time so I am going to contact the Manufacturer to get more info or purchase another. I may try the unit with my Windows Laptop as there are more software options.

This unit should arrive tomorrow and is suppose to work with Apple but is a Blue Tooth rather than WIFI. Lots of confusing info out there about iPad Blue Tooth not working with most of the Blue Tooth ELM327's.

Thanks for all the other info but looks like a foreign language. When I have more time I will look into learning it.

You guys make my head hurt with all of this ELM stuff. I'd just like for my car to smoothly and quietly get from point A to B when I get in and turn the key. :?
