2004 Volvo V70 - wiper blade recommendation

Post by BobbyC777 »

Gang -

Time for new wiper blades for the wagon. The Volvo blades from the dealer are great but pricey. Any thoughts on good blades that I can get online?

My driver's side blade is 23.5" and the passenger side is 21.75". The arm is a hook design. I'm just looking for refills.

Thanks!

Bob

You can buy just the refill for the OEM if you want, it's Bosch part # 43324 & 43322. I've done that a few times.

Eventually I just bought new wiper blades. I used Bosch Evolution Wiper Blades and have been very happy with them. The Bosch ICON blades seemed to be a better version but weren't available at my local store, if were ordering online would have got ICON blades. You can check the reviews of the ICON ones at Amazon etc, all very high.

I also use the rain-x windshield washer fluid, if you haven't tried it it's phenomenal! If you're already using rain-x blades or treatment it probably makes less of a difference.

Thanks for the info on the Bosch wiper blades. But nothing is easy.

The Bosch website application guide lists Part # 24A for my left side wiper and NOTHING for the right side. My V70 is a 2004.

For the 2005 model they list 24OE (that's the letter 'O') for the left and 21OE for the right. I'm surprised there is a difference between the 2004 & 2005 models. Any ideas what is different? My arm is a J-hook design but I thought that was pretty standard these days.

The FCP website also warns me that the 24OE will fit 2005-07 but not my 2004.

Like I said, nothing is easy.

Yeah - IIRC my car was the same, it only listed one side as fitting. I just bought the right length & type and it worked fine, no problems, despite not being listed as compatible. I had bought it at a physical store to make checking & returning easier (and was in a hurry to get them!).

My Evolution blades were part # 4822 & 4824. I'd just try the 24A and 22A, I don't know why they only list one side. They definitely fit perfect (don't hit or something like that), had them on over the winter without issue. This is all for an '02 S60 of course so perhaps something differs in your car, but I doubt it...

Do you have the standard Bosch type wipers that have the slide-in refill blades? If so, the most budget-oriented solution is to get the generic 7mm wide refills, I've found them at both Advance Auto and Pep Boys. They come in one standard (long) length and you cut them down to the length you need. The two spring metal stiffeners that run down each side of the rubber blade are scored at 1" intervals so you can snap them off at the proper length. Of course the rubber part can be cut to length with a pair of dikes or scissors. Once they're slid into the wiper and the end clip is locked into place, take a pair of pliars and make sure all of the little tabs are squeezed tightly against the refill. You can always pry the tabs outward a bit when it's time to remove the refill.

type in 'wiper blade refill' on ebay. you can buy 10 silicone refill blades in either 6 or 8 mm (standard sizes) for like $25 shipped. If your metal carriers are busted up, check rockauto just got 3 anco blades for mine for $14 shipped *shipping was $8...* but yes, the blades were under $2 each - the same ancos that are like $5-7/pop anywhere else. also, no time/gas to go buy them. 'old' style wipers work best IMO - the new fangled 'consistent pressure' blades suck. on my beetle they just skate around and don't even touch the windshield. Same on the v70 - there was one on the rear wiper when i bought the car - it only touched the glass on the ends. Replaced it with a real wiper and I'm good as gold.

- Old topic but important topic.

- My 2004 V70 FRONT wiper blades are 22" and 24".

- Went to Menards hardware store, they carry both brands:
1. Bosch Evolution: $10, made in China.
2. Trico Flex: $11.50, made in Mexico.

- I bought the Trico Flex 22" and 24" wiper blades b/c:

1. It is exactly as factory setup, the attachment point is "off-center", so theoretically when the blade is going up against snow, obstruction etc. the force is pushing sideways on the blade. I think this is the theory behind "off-center mount" vs "on-center mount" wiper blades. Not that it matters that much, but anyway you will be fine with either.
If you go with Bosch, you may have to adjust the wiper arm a bit, so the blade does not hit the cowl.

2. I want to help the southern neighbor a bit, economically speaking...

Used to have great luck with Walmart's Supertech, but they switched names to something else (red package?) and not really a fan.

NAPA's low tiered blade is very decent. I like to get them when they're on sale.

For the J bend fittings the proper OE setup should be the old style wipers with a a spoiler on the driver side. Bosch and others make them. Flat blades just look weird with the big J bend lump in the middle :-)

For -05 and up at least in Europe they don't use J bend anymore but snap fittings for flat blades. Bosch AeroTwins for example. OE blades of this style is made my Valeo over here i think.

You can retrofit the newer arms on an older car. I've done so myself. At normal speeds there really isn't a difference except it makes the car look slightly newer but the flat blades do better at speeds around 100 mph ;-)
