2005 s40 radio and cvvt issues, help pls

Post by socompsp »

so i went and bought my girlfriend this car, its the 2.4i. i have never owned a n/a car before, so when i smashed the gas on the test drive i thought this "moaning sound" was normal. it sounds like a mivec from a mitsubishi kicking in. long story short its the intake vvt screwing up but dealer hasnt determined weather its she pully or solenoid valve. i have a dice and vadis 2013a, but am having same issue as dealer, its not throwing a code, it did once, which is how we know its the intake side, but dont know specifically what the issue is. so how reasonable is it to buy the solenoid valve and put it in myself on the off chance that it is the problem? i guess im asking how hard are those valves to replace? im about to do the same on my 335i, but those are easy i can see them on the exterior of the motor, from the one diagram i saw for the s40, it looks as though they are under the valve cover? can anyone advise on this?

my second issue is that the battery kept dying every night, which turned out to be the CEM, had it remaned, and $1000 total later, i was told the radio amplifier was drawing 1amp with key off, so that needs to be replaced as well, but according to volvo here in winter park florida, there isnt a new one available in either the US nor Sweeden. i found a used one, but was told its not so simple to replace as to just plug in the new one, that it needed to be married/programmed to the car? is this true? if so i can do this with my dice and vadis software correct? thanks in advanced to anyone who can help shed some light on this dark issue.

The VVT diagnosis can be further narrowed down by a test procedure for the VVT solenoids in Vida in activations. Go toVehicle Communication, ECM module, then Activations and have a look.

I'm not up there with amplifiers on S40s however MVS poster "doublebug" may be able to help out with cloning firmware from otjer modules. This is something Vida can't do without a license.

On the 2005 S40 you'll need 5 new O rings for the inlet manifold then remove it to reveal the top of the cylinder head. The CVVT solenoids should sit just before the no 1 cylinder and they have connectors.

Some techs have reported that use of Mahle oil filters have left paper deposits in the oil system which have found their way into the CVVT solenoids. If you remove them with the intention of cleaning them you'll need two new CVVT gaskets.

Your Vida will show you exactly where they are and where the gaskets sit.
