98 V70 AWD Code Reading Question

Post by rmmagow »

Car is an early V70, i.e. mostly an 850. Motronic 4.4. I have a p0455 and know what it represents. If I bring my car to a dealer to have the full Volvo codes read will it give me more insight for analyzing this code? Will it pop like an E code saying Purge valve or some such?
I don't mind paying for a read nor do I feel like playing around trying to build a vag-comm, pc etc etc. I just want a better shot at attacking this and resolving it without going totally bananas with everything as I just don't have the time to play. I'll fix it but knowing what to tackle first would be a big help.
I think my indy might have the setup for reading volvo codes too.

Definetivly worth the trip to the dealer. I did the same thing. My indie found out that I need a new EVAP purge valve through reading the code with his volvo scanner thingie.

Let me know what you find out. While cracked hoses are the most common the dreaded P0455 can be caused by all of the following:

1) Loose gas cap (should clear after a bit)
2) Defective gas cap
3) Defective Purge Valve
4) Defective CCV (Cannister Close Valve)
5) Rusted or cracked lines/cracked hoses
6) Broken or cracked cannister
7) Leak in Gas tank
8) Rusted or cracked Gas filler tube
9) Bad gasket on bits that go into gas tank (sender unit, pump)
10) Bad FTPS (Fuel System Pressure Sensor)

I've been planning on trying to get specs on these valves and sensor but haven't yet had the time.

We already discussed P0455 code in the thread below:

IIRC, I told you to replace the vacuum hose and the Purge Valve Bosch PN 0280142300, about $45.

I am going to change out this valve tonight on my car. Question (might be a stupid one):

Can I just drive the car without deleting the code? In other words, will the code clear by itself eventually?

I can give you a definite "I don't know". On my Suburban codes will clear themselves after the condition isn't exhibited for a couple of trips but on my Volvo the CEL tends to stay on until I clear it. I have a couple of code readers handy so I typically get them cleared once I get home which is only one or two on and off cycles.

You can clear the code by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. You may have to drive 100 mikes before you can confirm the code is really gone.

Thanks, the reason I'm asking is because my emission re- test (don't ask  ) is due in 3 weeks. I can easily reset the codes myself. But then I have to wait for readiness of the monitors if I'm not mistaken. Which in this car can take forever.
I guess worst case, I'll let the date go buy and pay the late fee if things aren't ready. Or I can let it fail again and keep driving until I can re- test. That might be the better option because then I don't have to drive around without proper paperwork :o. What a pain.

Check with your CT inspector. The EPA (Federal) guideline allows up to 2 circuits to be not ready and still pass inspection, so if CT follows the EPA rule you can pass.

I just successfully pulled this off in NY with an evap circuit that takes 1000 miles to reset.

Good idea, thanks. I installed the new EVAP purge valve last night. Will reset the code at lunch today and then see what happens. I'll check closer to the test date how the monitors are doing and see if I have to talk to the inspector. I drive 1000k in a little less than 3 weeks, so I might just be okay.
