2006 V70 Shift Solenoids

Post by rmmagow »

Is having trouble with a 2006 shift solenoids common? is it a straight-forward fix? I'm looking at a V70 FWD, 160K. Guy has the solenoids and is asking $3500 for the car. Would I be able to install these on my back in the driveway or should I have a pro install? I'm more inclined to offer 2K for the car but it is a P2 so the ride would be nicer than my p80 and it looks pretty good. Stay Away???

It is a DIY job for someone that is used with repairs. I think they also need to be adjusted, look up on Youtube.

2006 is not common, but still those years Volvo didn't introduce transmission fluid service so perhaps the solenoids still get gummed up because of too old fluid.

The main thing here is to drive the car and watch how much the transmission issue has aggravated, for how long has been driving it since the issue started. Past a point, there is more damage than just the solenoids.

Thanks. It is a "walk-away" guy is clueless and still driving it. Guess I'll stick to P80's, them I can fix.

The front driver's side of the subframe gets dropped and afew items to disconnect to remove the front cover.

If you're talking about the pressure solenoids (3 large ones) they are simple enough to remove. Rule of thumb is 4 turns in of the allen key head to get them to correct position however usually they come pre-calibrated.

I bought a 2001 with similar issues (was mine for $1,400 although without the solenoids).
2-3 gear flare and horrible clunky shifts between other gears.
All the reading up I have done on here and elsewhere suggests that you can DIY however a clean dust/dirt free environment is crucial to not stuffing it up.
Buy a DICE with VIDA and you can definitely have a go and bringing the car back to life.
The P2's are a lovely comfortable car to drive.
