I have an SC811 in my Volvo. I recently did an evaporator change and had to take out the entire dash. When putting it all back together I noticed the factory radio quickly got hot even when it was simply plugged in and not turned on. When I plug the radio in and sit there for 10 minutes the rear plastic piece would be too hot to touch. Is this normal?
I have an amplifier plugged into the radio and everything plays perfectly fine.

I've had issues with a warm dash surrounding the radio as well. Doesn't seem to affect anything.

I just tested the amp draw (parasitic drain) that the stereo may or may not have been causing. The result is that the hot radio was causing a drain of 2.185 amps. When the radio is unplugged, the car draws .087 amps. So for some reason the hot radio is sucking something.
A friend has an SC710, and when I plugged that into my car there is no drain on the system and the draw remains around .087 amps.
Because the car is a 5 day a week driver, the constant recharging may have been hiding the drain. Now I have to choose between a possible fix, another factory radio or an aftermarket double din.
Thoughts anyone?

An OEM unit is easy. You can get a SC-815 or SC-816 real cheap. Heck, I have one, not cheap, but easier than going through wiring stuff.

I experienced almost the same problem, and my solution to the problem, was completely removing the cassette player, which was broken by the previous owner anyway, and neither am I using cassettes (I only have radio, and I use an fm transmitter to play music from an aux cable). You can try it if you want, and I hope it will help
