2010 S80 Ignition key locked in ignition SOLVED
2010 S80 Ignition key locked in ignition SOLVED
We have a 2010 S80 with the rectangle key in the dash. we have 60,000K on the vehicle. The ignition key stuck in approximately 6 moths ago and we were able to get it to release itself. It has since locked on both keys and locked two days ago and won't release it. My mechanic tried disconnecting the battery and it didn't release, he tried the voltage surge and no luck, I read where the computer might not be recognizing that the gear shift is in Park,,, Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
No message, and on the 2010 S80 you don't have a "key" in the Drivers console,, it is a rectangle block that inserts into the dash board area. and we have tried adding pressure to the gear shift hoping that it was not recognizing that it was fully in park
I have no direct experience with the block key and removal difficulty. My 2007 uses the same block key system. It appears a motor drives the block in and out of the dash. From the Volvo diagrams, there is a module behind the dash. I suspect this is a none servicable Volvo only item. Suggest calling your Volvo dealer. Sorry, perhaps someone will have better information, experience.
Mechanic had it again,,, and boosted the power from the battery and the ignition released the key, checked system for a short in system, negative short. Checked battery and battery failed. Purchased battery less than 1 yr ago from Sears. The battery never acted as if it was low voltage/amperage, car always started fine and no indications on the instrument panel of any problems. Put in the Volvo recommended battery and seems to work fine. Mechanic works on Volvo/BMW and Mercedes,, we don't have a Volvo dealership nearby. Mechanic said he'd never seen this problem before.

Thanks for posting the resolution, Dodger. Low batteries cause the strangest symptoms of any type of car problem, IMHO.
Too bad about the young battery doing this. I had a Sears Die Hard battery in my 850 for a decade. I don't know what it illustrates, but there it is.

Can any of the more modern "keyless" systems be retrofitted to the pre-2010 S80's? Would be great to get away from the motorized thing. Is there an RF sensor that detects the key such that the current one could be rigged so you just have the key near the ignition or even disable the motorized/locking portion and can just slide the key in and have it start?
