2004 XC90 New engine, no throttle

Post by MRJEL »

I'm tired and not thinking right!
I replaced a 2.5 turbo in my XC90 using a "known good" 2.5 turbo from an '08 S60.

I did use the XC90 wire harness, but used (mostly) the S60 sensors and throttle body. I visually verified all of them via appearance and numbers. I did swap the XC90 injector rail (S60 is different and had a sensor on one end) Physically it was a relatively easy swap, and I have verified everything is connected a couple of times.

It started after a few moments, and idled OK for 5 minutes or so, but there is NO throttle response at all. The TB is hooked up properly (although from the S60, it has the same numbering as the XC90). I did not get any codes at all.

Any ideas? As I said, I'm tired and not thinking right, so if there is an obvious answer and you want to call me stupid, right now I don't care! I kinda' feel that way!

Before you attempt to start the engine place key in pos II without starting for 50 secs then turn off then back on then crank and start. This is the adaptation procedure for the throttle body to your car's ECM.

Let us know if this helps.

I was sure excited this morning! I am now disappointed! The process had no effect. I did change out the throttle bodies and put the original 2004 on. Tried the relearn process again, and still no luck.

It takes a while, and maybe three attempts, but then starts and idles well, then after maybe 3-5 minutes it dies out.

The donor engine (2008 S60) was running well, car was totaled. The original XC90 was running fine until run low of oil, and #4 rod decided to escape the block!

Sorry to hear it had no effect. Time to look elsewhere. Do you have a diagnostic tool?

If you remove the pipe to the TB and have someone operate the pedal, does the butterfly flap move?

Another idea: did you have the key in PosII when you reconnectedbthe battery? Modules like to be started in this way on later Volvos.

I have a generic code reader, but I am not getting any codes at all.

The butterfly doesn't move at all whether running or not running (with key on).

No I didn't do that, but I will try it.

UPDATE:

Per advice of a "paid" expert, I swapped all electrical components from the 04 motor onto the 08. All sensors have the same numbers embossed on them, and attach and connect the same way, but that is what the expert told me to do.

I also tried precopster's battery "re-boot"

I cussed at it real loud, and even had the wife do some cussing, but it is still acting the same.

HELP!!

Have you checked all the fuses?
The sensors and throttle all should interchange.

Connecting battery cable with ignition in pos II is a safety thing for airbags. If you have worked on airbags the instructions have you do that as attaching battery with key on puts you somewhere out of airbag reach if the airbags or seatbelts deployed when powered up. No volvo instructon ever existed for doing this otherwise. It is not necessarily going to hurt anything but connecting battery cable after being disconnected long enough for capacitors to drain is what affects anything. Key on or key off is of no consequence, it is power down so the module loses its memory of fault that makes it enter protective mode (offline mode).

I have checked all the fuses and relays. I really couldn't understand the reason the guy said the sensors would need swapping. They are identically shaped and numbered!

Gotcha on the position II thing, that makes sense.

This vehicle threw a rod while on a spring break trip. It was running fine on the interstate, only someone forgot the oil! It sat at a shop until the end of May when I bought it and towed it off. Battery was disconnected when I got it, and I installed a new battery about 4 days ago after the motor swap.

Is the PROM gone? Could that be the trouble? If so, will I need a dealer service department? The closet one to me is about an hour away! Is it possible to "flash" the ECM off the car via then VIN#?
