20XX All How to determine if the engine is running

Post by MattReed59 »

I have a 2003 S40, but this is a much more generic question...

I work for a company that makes a device that attaches to the ODBII buss and monitors the vehicle :D. Before attempting to connect to the buss (my Volvo was an ISO buss) we need to know if the engine is running, we determine that by looking at the voltage. If above 12.8V, the engine is running.

We attached it to my Volvo the other day, the voltage is always 12.3V (except when off, then it reads 12.7!). The battery reads 12.7 when not running, 13.8 when running (as we expect), but the system buss voltage must be regulated on a Volvo (we have not seen this before) because it's always 12.3 V.

Whats weird is that the wiring diagram shows that the ODBII connects directly to the battery.

I figure all you guys on this forum are smart guys and and can save us hours of time by mentioning some trick you know, or suspect... maybe?

Thanks ahead of time!

Never mind. We found that my ODBII port was damaged, causing a poor connection to the battery connection.
