1996 850 glt random stalling, several dtc's logged

Post by weird beard »

Hi all. I have 1996 volvo 850 GLT wagon, 2.3 turbo. I just replaced my coolant hoses from the engine to the heater core (on monday). Since that repair, I have had a random stalling when pulling up to a stop. Very intermittent, yet concerning none the less. Faults retrieved are P0302, P0336, P1310. These faults are logged since the issue started. I don't know if they came up before stalling or only when it actually stalls as my CEL is always on for P0133 (O2 sensor) I also know the faults are recent as I frequently check faults to make sure nothing else has logged.

Is there anything I might have done while changing these hoses that comes to mind? I can decipher the faults and troubleshoot them, but if anyone has ever run into this and can help me fast track to the issue, I would be very grateful.

Perhaps the issue is not related to the coolant hoses, but as I was in the area of the crank sensor and distributor, I thought it would be relevant. I didn't disconnect or remove any connectors or components related to them. Only took off the intake hose assembly and air box. I didn't power wash anything either.

Also, the car is in fairly decent mechanical condition as I have done a lot of maintenance to this poor neglected car since buying it last fall. New cap, rotor, plugs, cam seals, pcv, fuel pump, tcv, turbo bypass valve, cv shafts, all fluids and filters. Followed by a few good used parts while working through some of the other issues it had when I got it - fuel pump relay, fuel pressure regulator, MAF sensor, injectors (ev6 upgrade - 4 hole disc style vs single hole pintle style)

Thanks in advance.

You have probably dislodged or broken one of the many vacuum lines on this motor

Take a good luck at the turbo and inspect all the hoses carefully. If they are shedding carbon onto your hands get new ones !

Didnt find any issues with the vacuum lines. Pressed on the plug wires, two of them plus the coil wire clicked. Might have dislodged them removing the air box. Also found the coil wire resting against the crank sensor wiring. I just hope it was something as easy as this. cleared all the faults, will see how it goes.

With multiple codes, it's good to clear them and see what comes first. It's common to get multiple codes from poor running with a single point failure.

When I left my intercooler hose loose, I generated about 6 codes which I chased for three weeks

96 GLTs were not turbo, maybe your car is a 97?

I confess I thought that the "T" in GLT means turbo....is that wrong?

Wellll I *think* GLT is for Grand Luxury Touring ...

For US spec vehicles:
96 and earlier, GLT models are NA (non-turbo)
97 and later, GLT models are LPT (low pressure turbo)

In Europe, the model years may be shifted because they got the new models a bit earlier, e.g. a 96 GLT in Europe can be the same as a 97 GLT here. Always confuses me. I thought the model/year distinctions for Canada cars were like those for US but that could be wrong.

No faults have returned so far. I can assure you the car is a 1996 GLT wagon with high pressure Turbo.

Do you know if it is a 2.3 or a 2.4?
