2008 V70 150K mile scheduled service

Post by popphl »

Our fairly new-to-us 2008 V70 is coming up on 150k miles. We bought it when it had 141k. It drives great and has been serviced at the same Volvo dealer every 7,500 miles like clockwork.

I called the dealer today to ask what to expect at the 150k scheduled maintenance, and I was quoted $2,120 over the phone. That seems like a lot to me! I do want to take good care of this car, but I also don't want to be unnecessarily soaked.

Here's what the service schedule says is due at 150k:
  • Oil and filter change
Check fuel lines for damage, leaks
Check exhaust system for damage, leaks
    Replace air filter cartridge
    Replace spark plugs
    Check and adjust coolant level
Check battery fluid level and mounting
Replace auxiliary drive belt, clutch, and guide pins
    Replace alternator rubber sleeve
Check and adjust power steering fluid
    Check steering/front suspension
    Check rear suspension for wear
    Visually inspect bevel gear
    Check driveshaft joints for wear/play
    Check driveshaft boots
Check propeller shaft, pilot bearing and universal joints for wear
Check and adjust washer fluid level
    Check wiper blades
    Replace cabin air filter
    Replace brake fluid (every 37.5k)
    Check and adjust parking brake
    Check brake pads
Check brake hoses and lines for damage/leaks
Check tire pressure, wear and condition
Could those few "replace" items (oil & filter, spark plugs, air filter, cabin air filter, brake fluid, aux drive belt/clutch/drive pins, alternator rubber sleeve) really add up to over $2,000? Is this work a non-dealer indy shop could do just as well? Are there even any indies in Philadelphia I should trust?

Thanks in advance.

Way overpriced. The belt change does take some time, 3 1/2 hours range, due to having to remove power steering pump and a/c compressor. plus the alignment pin, water pump drive hub, and belt
The car has an electric parking brake so no adjustment is needed.
Brake fluid flush should be no more than 1 hour plus fluid.
Alt drive sleeve is 1 hour plus sleeve. This could likely wait as it is an age issue more than anything. It doesn't really move.
Spark plugs 1 hour plus the plugs
air filter .1 plus the filter
cabin air filter .3 plus the filter

I would flush cooling system in spite of Volvo not recommending it. Other engines using water-to-oil oil coolers, like this engine, have been seeing oil cooler clogging due to coolant components precipitating in the cores of cooler with time.

Thanks for the info, Jimmy57. Do you see any reason why a competent local shop couldn't complete this maintenance (rather than the dealer)?

Did the engine air filter and cabin air filter myself -- those were a piece of cake.

The cabin air filter replacement procedure is clearly shown in this video. Only tool needed is a Torx T20 screwdriver. My V70 was slightly different than the car shown in the video in that the video shows a circuit box that needs to get moved out of the way, and there was nothing in the way in my car.

The engine air filter procedure is shown in this video. Only tool needed is a Torx T25 screwdriver.

I had to call around to find a parts store that had the filters in stock, but they were less than $50 all told at Advance.

Looks like the brake flush was done at 133K, so I'm good there for another 20K. I have an appointment at the local shop next week to do the remainder of the items on the schedule.

Here's how it all worked out. Having been assured by my local mechanic that his shop could do the scheduled maintenance, I took it to him. After taking a look at it, he said he wasn't comfortable doing the job and that I'd be better off taking it to a dealer. Good to know.

After talking to three Philadelphia-area dealers on the phone, I made an appointment at Cherry Hill Volvo and took it in. Their price was lower than what the other dealers wanted to charge for the basic 150K service -- about $950 since the brake flush didn't have to be done and I had taken care of the cabin/pollen air filter and the engine air filter. The expensive parts here were the spark plugs ($99/set) and the auxiliary drive belt, tensioner, and pulley ($300 altogether). They inspected but chose not to replace the alternator rubber sleeve. They also noted oil leaks from the vacuum pump and oil trap. The former needed to be rebuilt (Volvo has a kit for that) and the latter replaced. Those were costly, and I walked out of there $1,550 lighter after some discounts. Still, a reasonable price to pay to keep this noble beast on the road. It looks, feels, and runs great with 150,080 on the clock. Hope this is helpful for folks.

So, we are about to have the 150k service done on a 2007 S80 3.2 FWD. I've been calling around for quotes. A local, Volvo factory trained independent mentioned a few items that don't fall on the 150k service list such as 1) replacing the water pump and 2) replacing vacuum pump o-rings (for which he said the parts kit was $77).

I was thinking of doing the radiator hoses as cheap insurance while doing the recommended coolant replacement.

Any thoughts on the water pump and vacuum pump o-rings recommendations?

I’m now at 227k and haven’t done either of those repairs. Only pricey items in the last 75k have been alternator, front struts, and a cv axle. Good luck!

The service history that came with the car said the vacuum pump was replaced at around 80k. I'll do the o-rings as preventive maintenance against leaks.

Anybody replace the thermostat on these as a service item even though not on the 150 k list?

I replace my 3.2 Thermostat every 10 years for both of my 3.2

I've had a 100% failure rate.

Note: both of my 3.2s are above 125K miles

Based on this thread I am not replacing my water pump until it starts leaking.

The one thing that I did replace for my LR2 3.2 is the overdrive pulley for the Alternator (I did the 150K service closer to 100K) and the pulley for the Alternator had failed (clutch no longer worked it was solid) and the pulley for the serpentine belt was also seized.

I wonder if the failure mode on the Alternator is related to the pulley or if it is related to the brushes. I should have replaced the brushes at 100K

Thanks

Paul
