06 S80 is this a blown head gasket sign?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

06 S80 is this a blown head gasket sign?

Post by neworleans »

Hello all,

Recently purchased this 06 S80 with a cracked radiator, before purchasing, checked the oil and everything else, looked fine. Finally I was able to change the radiator and also changed the oil but when drained the oil, it came out like mud, it was thick brown, the car sat about 4-5 months after purchase. I changed the oil and filter and oil looks still bad like in the picture. Do you guys think I have a blown head gasket? What you guys think?

I appreciate for any input in advance.

Yes it does rather look like it.
The coolant level will be going down also as it gets into the crankcase.
Do a compression test but also look for evidence of water in the cylinders when you remove the plugs.
Needs attention urgently as its going to damage the motor if not rectified ASAP.
Leaving a motor sitting for a long period like that is not good either as corrosion starts.

Don't jump on HG yet. If the car was run only short periods due to the radiator leak prior to you buying it the condensation could make the oil that light milky color.
If the only symptom ends up being milky oil the oil cooler can leak and do that too.

It also builds up pressure in the coolant tank even when the engine is cold, why is it doing this?

That is good evidence of head gasket leaking.

Here the story of my car:3 years ago while driving suddently the RED triangle lit up and I glanced at the info.message it said LOW coolant stop asap.Took me about a mile away to find the place to park and the temp.guage point at RED.Pop the hood up:oh my!the radiator inlet pipe broke inhaft, coolant all over.
After replaced a radiator I have to top off coolant every month, could not find the leak, had high pressure in coolant system even in a cold morning.A year later a heater hose that go to heater core start leaking, replaced, still have to top off and high pressure,no leak to be found, another year later heater core busted, replaced, six months later, have to top off coolant twice a week, still no leaking, and the reservoir tank cracked from that high pressure. Now I believed:I had a cylinder gasket problem, got quote from several repair garage runs from $1,500.00 to $2,500.00,can not afford it.Turn to youtube to find out how to replace the head gasket the cheaper way.Stumble on the site show how to repair head gasket without remove the head. They used a bottle of liquid name the BlueDevil Pour'N'Go to repair the head gasket,I was skeptical at first. Then I check the comment,it has about80% agree that works,it cost around $40.00 at local auto parts.2days of hard thinking,I decide what the heck, try it.
Six months later,it still hold up very good, hope it stay that way for long time to come, knock on the wood, the temp.guage needle stay in middle, one other thing that amaze me is when I turn loose the reservoir cap in the morning there is NO pressure at All and very little when it hot after 20miles driven, and the engine runs smoother.Btw I did replace the reservoir tank too,and please don't get me wrong,I did not endorse this product but it works for me,I hope it works for you also.

Thai,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
I have pretty much the same problem, the leakage could be more on my car tough.
How did your engine oil look when you had this problem?
I may try that product.
How do you apply it? Any videos or write ups?

This is my broken water pump.
This is my broken water pump.
My engine oil look fine for all that time never had mix with coolant at all,I didn't mention, the engine sometimes started rough in the morning for about 1-2minutes before it runs normal, yes CEL flashing but did not stay.
One commenter said this product works best with Prestone antifreeze only and I took his word.First I drain coolant out because mine was not a Prestone, flushed the engine and drain it off, then remove hose clam at the cylinder head coolant outlet toward radiator pull the hose out bend up and pour the BlueDevil liquid into the radiator and the premix coolant followed til it full, reconnect the hose back and tight the clam, refill coolant reservoir til it full to the top no need to cap it yet.Start and idle engine til it burb, top it off to the Full mark and cap it,keep an eye on coolant level and let engine idle for One hour total.I did mine in the evening time so I didn't have chance to drive.Next morning coolant drop little bit below Low mark and just top it off.2 months ago my water pump bearing busted broke all the impellers(which made from plastic) lost haft coolant.Since after my radiator broke I always keep 2gallons of water in my car for just in case. This water help me to get home 3hours later,on and off driving, firsthing come to mind was head gasket is blownout, secondthing it could be a water pump,I chosed the second. After 2 1/2 hours later the pump is out of car with all the broken impellers.Another 2hours of putting all things back together fill up the new coolant this time no BlueDevil.Till now I havn't top any coolant off or high pressuse in the reservoir yet.Keep my fingers cross.Hope it helps...
