OK, we're getting closer! I replaced the ECC unit with a used one that I got on e-bay. When I initially turned it on, the fan would not turn on in the AUT position. I slid the switch to the right and the fan came on. I checked the ECC fault codes (B-1) and it read 4-1-4. I cleared the code. I tried it again and same thing, would not work in the AUT position. I checked the codes again and this time the fault code read 2-1-1 (driver's side damper motor). Don't think this has anything to do with the AUT position, but maybe it does. What do you think?

It does have everything to do with AUT mode.

The position of that motor arm dictates air movement from that vent.

AUT is the mode that runs Autonomously utilizing motors and sensors.

Question: If there is something wrong with that damper motor, will it prevent the fan from coming on in the AUT mode? The fan comes on OK when the slider is moved to the right. Shuts off in the AUT position.

BTW, before I had all that problem with the ECC unit, there was no indication there was a problem with the damper motor. All I did was to replace the ECC unit.

To address, almost all of the questions.

I can only speak from personal experience.

I believe the early ECC units had stored the fault codes. The original fault may had triggered the "capacitor malfunction".

They seem better after the fix, but you may still have to address the original fault and clear it.

It is all fun, (not for everyone) an code reader is needed for the 4.4 monotronic ECU. But I believe you can still retrieve codes from the OBD I unit under the hood on your '94.
