just bought at 2001 s40 really cheap ( yep it needed some work). guy said needed head gasket, turbo etc. Looked on this site and read a few things regarding oil usage, head gaskets, etc. Settled on the oil trap possibility. Does not over heat, engine runs okay ( nothing rough, etc and so forth).
Doing the oil trap is not bad ( not finished yet ) but wanted say holy molly! That thing must have weighed 3-4lbs. Completely and without a doubt clogged!! Car has 103k on it and it has never been changed. Not sure the recommended period between changes but wow! Waiting for an intake gasket but I hoping this will take care of the car smokn a bit. Will be changing the oil a few times to try and flush out the chunk.
Hoping that the clogged system did not blow out seals in other places. Guess I will find out once back together.
Wonderful site I might. Big big help! thank you!

2001 s40 smokn
well finished it today. new oil trap and drained oil ( new oil put in). Started right up. That is always a good sign. Smoked for a few min and then only a slight amount still. I think it is still burning residual.
No check engine lights and no overheating. Serpentine belt snapped though. found that the Ac compresser pulley is bad. Will have to replace.
Will run in for awhile and then drain and put new fluids in car.

Hope you remembered to clear sludge from the engine block ports when you replaced the oil trap?
The hoses can get blocked up also.

I have cleaned every hose to and from the oil trap. I clean the "port" that the small hose goes to from the bottom of the oil trap. Did I miss another port? Is there a preferred method to cleaning ports?
I found , I believe we call it a bango , to be clogged and cleaned that.
The car is still smokin though. Still through the oil dip stick and where you pour the oil. I took out the intake hose to the turbo and cleaned that as well ( I believe it called the PCT valve).
What am I missing. No engine light, no over heating.
I am missing something. What?
Frustrating. Don't want to take to shop but we have a volvo only shop with a good rep. really like to figure this out.
checked the plugs and they are clean ( very white). No oil build up.
Help

With oil trap removed check the ports to make sure they are not clogged, if they are carefully remove the deposits and make sure the openings are unobstructed. Pay particular attention to the bottom port that has a tendency to become completely blocked. You can try using a drill bit to carefully ream it out if yours is solidly blocked.
I am going to tear it down again ( the 3rd time ). On the previous 2 times I cleaned the 2 ports (at least I thought I did ) will cleaner, brush, and air hose.
Is there anything else I may be missing here? I have all the symptoms of a clogged vent system. Is there anything else that may cause crankcase pressure build up? is there an additive I can add to oil ( sea foam) to help " ease its pain" and to loosen up what ever may be still clogged?
thanks for all the help in advance.

Not sure if this matters. Took air hose and insert in dip stick tube. Air flowing out of oil spout as well as tube from oil trap to top of head. Still have smoke coming out of dip stick and oil spout area.
smoke coming out tail pipe as well.
wondering now if rings or turbo are bad but car ran smooth when I first got it. Not a hiccup. Got to temp and nothing. After first cleaning smoke diminished considerably but now it has picked up again. ugh!

Have you seen the forums repair database?
This link is for a PCV on a 5 cylinder but basically applicable.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=28487
Have you done a glove test over the oil filler opening since you completed the PCV service.
If you have vacuum it is okay.
A compression test might indicate if the engine has valves not sealing well, worn rings etc.
Some members have also done a Seafoam treatment on the engine after a PCV job to help clean out the engine thoroughly. There is a post for that in the repair database also.
