2010 XC60 Oil Low Light came on

Post by quirozson »

Today my oil low warning came on (which is worrying me as my car only has 52,000 and shouldn't be burning too much oil- Last oil change about 3000 miles ago).

When I stopped to check it out it did not seem that low. See attached picture which was taken after letting HOT car sit for about 60 seconds.

I added 1/4 of a quart and the light went off.

I checked the oil level a few hours later and the level was at max with only adding 1/4 of a quart.

Seems like it might not be a consumption issue but a sensor issue ... ?

Please help if you have experience with oil consumption with SI6 engines. I noticed there is a technical journal TJ 24643 issued for this which got me concerned and I hope it's just a sensor problem.

1. Should I be concerned about oil consumption?
2. Should the warning have appeared on my DIM or should it have stayed off at that oil level?

Taking it to the dealer on Wednesday and want to be armed with as much info as possible.

Thanks!

The dipstick will read differently inserted the two different ways. I think ENGINE faces forward instead of MOTOR but use the one that reads lowest.

I checked again this morning after the car had been parked all night. Now it is reading above the max mark by a small margin. It didn't seem to make any difference if I had the "engine" or "motor" wording on the dipstick facing forward.

"Low Oil Light" has me frightened as the car is about to go out of warranty.

I don't want a car that's showing signs of oil consumption to go out of warranty without getting fixed.

I don't want to overreact if it's more likely a sensor issue.
