abscate: thanks for the encouragement. It's one of those, "Just do this, really" kind of things.
I understand the design and how it locks the two tubes together, the girdle spring constricting over the flare end to secure it and I guess there's an 0-ring in there to hold the seal.
I haven't been able to wiggle, force, or otherwise get the spring release tool to slip in there under the spring, spreading it enough to release.
I haven't tried it for a while, due to finishing up on other projects, but I really want the a/c working again, so will be back at it soon.

Once you get these parts rotating , Jim, I'm guessing it will help loosen the spring too. Are you popping it with PB blaster or the looser of your choice every few days? Time is your ally with loosening fluids.
