Hello,
Since this morning my 2006 2.5T A/T XC70 has had these symptoms in the following order:
1) "Reduced engine performance" error;
2) Rattle in the accelerator and steering wheel when idle;
3) "Check engine light" appearing;
4) When opening the hood, oil is spilled all around the oil cap seal (see picture)
Now, for the last interventions on the car:
- Yesterday, I left the parking lights on all night (can the battery be related to this ?)
- Last week, the remote was changed which means the dealer accessed the ECU;
- I have heard the fan going very loud these last weeks when I cut the engine;
- Last service 7 000 kms ago with a torque arm bushing and timing belt replacement.
I was thinking of the oil cap leaking, but why "reduced engine performance" and the rattle then ? Or the fan being broken which would make the oil overheat and spill (though the oil gauge indicator has not indicated anything abnormal at all).
Any idea of the potential causes ?
Thanks.

It could be a simple as the gasket on the oil cap has let go, spewing oil out. This upsets the PCZv system and engine vacuum! triggering the CEL.

That's part of the PCV ( crankcase ventilation system) and will cause your symptoms as noted. good luck!

$520 it's a little bit expensive.
While there, replace the PCV can (oil trap) as well, bet it's already clogged. Also check if the PCV drain inside the oil pan is free or clogged (push some air through the opening behind the oil trap).

I'm in South Africa so labour is rather cheap but parts are much more expensive than in Europe/North America due to import duties and Volvo specialists are extremely seldom (only 2 Volvo dealers which are completely overbooked and 2 Volvo specialized indis in the whole of Johannesburg). To give you an idea, a regular service at the dealership is between 500 and 600$, around 400$ at the indi.
I think he checked the PCV (I asked him to do it) but I'll double check tomorrow if he did this when I get the car back.
