1998 V70 XC rear sub-frame corrosion?

Post by scot850 »

Have any of you had problems with aluminum corrosion of the rear suspension sub-frame? I noticed a portion of the frame was loose on the RH side over the inner wheel arch and it fell away when touched. I checked another car (2000 V70 XC) and it had corrosion to a lesser extent on the LH side but in the same area just in front of the rear bolt support and where it runs under the chassis frame at the back of the wheel arch.

Talked to an aluminum welding specialist and they will look at it next week and see if it can be welded, but corrosion in aluminum can't be welded like good old steel.

Wow, I must be the un-luckiest guy out there if I am the only one to have an 98-00 AWD Volvo V/S70 with this problem. Either there are a lot of folks who have never checked (and I recommend you do if you live in a wet area or an area that gets a lot of salt.

I have seen a few in the scrap yards that have corrosion issues in that area, I believe mostly from the different alloys and steel components.

I have heard of some the all wheel drive components being a bit rough to disassemble in some circumstances due to corroded parts.

Different metals do not always play well together in wet environments.

Classic case of salt used in winter, especially in Canada, northern US.

In all of my cars, around spring time, April/early May, I clean the chassis with a garden hose.
You need to kneel down, look up and spray the garden hose upward to all parts of chassis (brake lines, subframe etc.).

Corrosion with salt is the worst in summer when the heat is in full swing (July, August).
