95 850 turbo , smoke from dipstick tube?

Post by chrisjm91 »

I have smoke coming from my dipstick tube on my 95 850 turbo. Ive heard it has something to do with the PCV, but im not sure where to start to solve this issue. Any advice would greatly appreciated

That is correct you need the entire PVC system replaced, clean the ports and ptc valve. Do it ASAP because it will blow out your seals and the RMS is a huge labour expense

Thanks for the link! I just had the engine replaced and have all new gaskets, but in doing this procedure, removing the intake manifold is needed to complete it. Would I be okae keeping the same intake gasket since it was replaced less than a month ago?

Keep the I.M. gasket since it is new.
Again, review the link erikv11 posted above.
Pay attention to PNs and yes you can keep the oil trap, no need to replace it.
Just clean the oil trap with solvent and re-install it.
I wrote that DIY and it is now 2 years later using the 5/8-inch heater hose, zero problem.

PS: For now, if you don't want to blow your RMS, then a trick is: pull your dipstick upward about 2-3mm to allow the smoke to escape. Just don't wash the engine with the dipstick up like this!

It seems to be the first and usual issue for a new owner.

Now, on my third 850.

I did clean the oil trap on my second after the simple realization that the drain to the block was the offending orifice. So no need for the oil trap.

Being a Turbo, I did run a larger "5/8 hose from the oil trap to the PTC nipple at the turbo intake.

Now. The new T-5R has been altered. I will be replacing the intake manifold, injectors and throttle body.

I have a good idea, I may not see an oil trap at all, but a couple hoses venting to ambient air.
PCV routing altered.
PCV routing altered.
I completely understand what, and why this was done. There may have been a catch canister, or this was just becoming a joyride track car.

Either way, it will get some attention. I believe it to be redeemable and replace original type routing for the most part.

Opening it to air will solve the problem, but it's a bit unkind to Mother Nature to vent crankcase gasses to atmosphere. Fine for a track car, but not a daily driver.
