1998 c70 cracked head. Will V70XC turbo head work

Post by skl63 »

Hi all,
I have been a offered a 98 C70 non turbo, very cheaply, however it has a cracked head. I also have a head from a 2000 V70XC, low pressure turbo.

I am wondering if these heads are interchangeable, thus making the project worthwhile.

How much work is involved in changing the head on the C70, and do you think it is worth doing or is it a throw away car?

Thanks for help,

Cheers
Scott

The heads changed in 1999 and are not interchangeable with earlier heads without considerable modification.

I haven't ever seen a non turbo C70 in Australia. As far as I'm aware these were sold in UK and other european markets.

I'm in the middle of playing with heads and engines at the moment! The 2000 head won't work without significant fiddling. I do know that a fully reconditioned head would go for around AUD$700-800. Is that too much??? Who knows. As for the job itself...It is well within the DIY scope. Plenty of info out there to help you. Change the timing belt, water pump and tensioners while your are there.

The job sucks! I jsut did on on my wife's V70 I'm in three weekends now and now I have a electrical issue. Its a big job - doable but add about $500 for kits and timing belt/water pump new head bolts etc. Do the PVC system whilst you are there. Best prices are Rock Auto.

I do not know if the heads themselves exchange, but the cams won't. After 98 they went to variable cam timing.

Good Luck C70s are great cars, drive beautifully handle great. The windows are slow adn break and the seats if you use the back seats are a total PITA. they go in the what could Volvo have been thinking box!
