1992 850 Front passenger door won't unlock with key

Post by riccardo8501992 »

Hi. My first post here...

The central locking actuator (via key - no remote access) malfunctioned recently. The locks started locking when I drove over a slight bump. Also, the front left (passenger) door would not lock/unlock when I locked the drivers door or trunk lid.

An auto electrician fixed the problem (I think he changed the actuator mechanism) but now I have found it is impossible to manually lock/unlock the front passenger door. The key simply does not turn in the lock, although it does still fit into it ok. It seems likely to me that the apprentice that worked on it did something to cause this, as it has always worked previously, but the owner thinks that the lock itself has nothing to do with the actuator mechanism that was fixed.

Could there be a connection or not? I'm bamboozled. What can stop a key from working in a lock? All other locking functions are working ok. Your help would be appreciated.

If the key is not turning in the lock, and assuming it has not just seized up with lack of use (WD40??), then it is possible (if this was the door that was worked on) that the lock mechanism in the door has not been re-connected correctly and is preventing the lock mechanism to work. Suggest pulling the door card and look at the lock mechanism while trying to turn the key and see if you can see if it is binding up or one of the metal rods attached to it is fitted incorrectly.

Thanks very much Neil. I will have a go myself I think.

I can have a google for a site with good instructions, but if you or anyone else knows of one I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

My bet is that the rod from the key cylinder to the locking mechanism isn't correctly seated into the socket on the door latch after the latch was changed. It is very difficult to get the rod into the socket.

The way to do it is to remove the lock cylinder and then remove the second small rubber cover plate on the edge of the door and use a small screwdriver to guide the rod into the socket as you reinstall the lock cylinder. I actually have some fairly detailed instructions from a thread a few months ago but it will be this evening at the earliest before I can find that thread.

This is specific to a 70 series car but the same things apply to an 850.
