The air impact driver is probably not the problem. The average homeowner compressor doesn't have the minimum sustained 100 psi pressure to break loose lug nuts consistantly. My old compressor only chugs out 90 psi which will loosen a few lug nuts torqued to 81 ft lb. After that I have to bleed off the air to get it to cycle and get a full charge in the tank to finish the last couple of nuts. If the nuts are over-tightened there is no way. I have to pull out my 24" breaker bar. As stated, an electric impact would be best--always sustained full power.

This brings up a question. I have had the experience of putting one of our cars in the shop with instructions to torque the lugs to 81 ft lb and had it come back with them severely over tightened. Is this a worry for warped rotors or hubs on these Volvos? I have never had an issue with these cars, but I sure have with previous American cars. How much abuse can a Volvo hub stand?

My compressor is good to 125 psi, but the driver only to 90. These are not lug nuts, though, they are lug bolts. More PB blaster and the pipe for them, now that I have a 1/2" drive 19mm socket. I'm wary of using a torch on them with the tires mounted.

Got them with this morning with a pipe extension. Tried the pipe before but didn't have a 1/2" drive socket. The 3/8" wrench wasn't up to the task, when I tried it with a 1/2 to 3/8" adapter, I just twisted the adapter into two pieces.

Now that you are on the downslope, a two Swedish meatball penalty is assessed for using a Phillips as a punch. Right tool makes you no fool.

Grossly over torqued lug nuts/bolts (doesn't matter which)

80 FT lbs dry is correct, with lube probably about 1/2 that.

I'm a firm believer in the right tool for the right job, but I'm also recently out of grad school, and kind of broke. But I did read a write up of the job that said you could do it with a Phillips. But that punch was five dollars well spent, I think the 3 lb engineer's hammer helped a bit too.

I am positive that abscate is joking about lube on the lugs -
Please do not lube the lugs; calculating the 1/2 wet torque may be very tricky (if I can put this mildly)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

So I shouldn't have soaked the lugs in a tub of butter before I put them back... I swear I read that somewhere. ;)

Absolutely not joking, and I have not put a torque wrench on a lug nut in 40 years.

I'm guessing you don't live in a place where salt, slouch, ice , and grit are the norm for 1/2 the year. On top of this, I small craft sail and am often dipping wheels into water and even salt water on occasion. Without lube in our area, lugs will freeze up and leave you with a real hassle..usually when SWMBO is on a business trip in an Ann Taylor and I am in Israel...... :o

I try to tighten all the cars with the factory supplied wrench, so that the driver has a shot at getting them off with tools at her disposal.

Above roughly 10 foot lbs of torque, lugs will not loosen up and fall off. 80 foot pounds for dry lug nuts is spec torque, with lube you will torque less since the lug has less resistance.

If you are in SoCal or nice dry parts of the country without salt, I, too, would no-lube and torque to 60-80 FT lbs.

And after 40 years trouble free...God smote down my hubris boat trailering this week.

Had to move a boat 300 miles for a friend, threw my standard trailering kit into the T5, then realised I needed more stuff so loaded up the Eurovan

Hooked up the 2500 pound load, and noticed the left tire was low. Stopped at gas station and topped up, except the valve split and would not hold more than 20 psi.

Jacked up, put on spare, gave them the initial tighten, but , the, distracted by phone call, neglected to tighten to pull torque (dry, so 80-90!ft lbs)

About 30 miles north of departure, my Vivaldi was interrupted by the horrible staccato of wheel machining away lug studs on the trailer. I was in the middle of nowhere, 2000 hours, and obviously upgefudged.

...until I remembered I had thrown an old, second spare into the voluminous interior that VW scorns being called a minivan...

The only problem was the spare was a consumed, dry rotted, cords exposed(sidewall) pos.

Well, I put it on, about half the diameter of the studs were gone, so I tried to tighten them until I just felt the stud in tension but no further. I dare not touch the tire IR valve but it turned out it was holding 35 psi.

Off I went at reduced speed, 55 mph, and got home the 300 miles on that 12 year old stinker. It will be retired (pun?) with honors for bailing me out.
