Hey everyone,
Haven't been on in a while
I've decided to address my growing exhaust leak and loud muffler (finally)
that being said I have a few questions about exhaust work;
First, my leak is on the flex joint between the mani and that cat. FCP just started selling the joint instead of having to buy the whole manifold. Here is a link to the joint. Would this joint just clamp on? or would there be welding involved? I don't want to drop $150+ on a new manifold if I can help it.
I'm assuming my CAT is fine because it has given my no problems.
Second, I'm looking to replace the muffler that was on the car when I bought it (its got a deep grumble to it which is cool for a bit but gets annoying. I'm assuming it was the cheapest that whatever muffler shop he brought the car to could get). Does anyone have experience with the starla muffler from FCP? I can get the same part cheaper on eeuroparts. Is it nice and quiet? I'm assuming that since it's OEM (I think) it should be exactly what my car needs.
Is there anything else I should be aware of when doing large amounts of exhaust work?
Thanks
Nick

There was a recent set of posts on replacing the back end of the exhaust system on a 850 written up by Jim Peisker on his blog.
It's a nice blog with lots of photos, instructions and background technical info, well worth checking out:

On the idea of replacing just that flex pipe, I would go by the muffler shop and ask the to take a look to say if they can do the welding. I don't know if there is enough room in the manifolds to replace just the flex.

I think I'm just going to replace the manifold.erikv11 wrote:On the idea of replacing just that flex pipe, I would go by the muffler shop and ask the to take a look to say if they can do the welding. I don't know if there is enough room in the manifolds to replace just the flex.
I'm 99% sure my car (1997) doesn't have EGR and that appears to be an important factor in buying a manifold. Does anyone know the difference between a manifold for models with EGR and ones without it? If i dont have EGR is there just an extra hole I can plug on the manifold? It's something I don't really know about.

EGR is just an extra bung (hole) on the manifold. You can plug it, probably with an oil drain plug (that's what I use to plug the empty SAS bungs). Get the OBX manifold it is like $175, plug the hole, good to go. Presumably the car does not have SAS either?

(air pump under the front left of the car right?)

My car does have SAS
it's a '97 and I'm pretty sure those all have SAS
I've got the rubber tube coming out of the front of the air box and their is a bung hole on the left side of the exhaust manifold with a line coming out of it (assuming also SAS)
my new question is
Is the bung the same for EGR and SAS or do I need to order a special manifold that I'm not able to find? I'd rather not do an SAS delete.

I don't see the bung in that pic, is it in the pic? If so, it should be the right manifold. SAS and EGR use a different bung, most of the manifolds come with a bung for SAS and you have to sort of massage the EGR pipe to get it to hook up there.
