S60 AWD in the Snow

Post by brianf »

I was shocked how well this car goes in the snow. We had our first real snow storm of the year the past couple of days. (Toronto).

I thought that when I chose the 17" wheels and tires I might be giving up some winter grip.

Even with the 17's this thing just kept gripping and moving forward!!!

Nice. Does it have that stability control feature? If so, does it seem to work? How does it act?
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

I'm not sure. How would I know? They package the cars different in Canada than the USA.

If you are talking about DSTC, I did not get that feature.

I live in the USA(Chicago) and have the DSTC. We also got our heaviest snow. And my s60 AWD plowed right through it all. It works very well, operates very smooth...Especially from a stopped position with Winter mode turned on.

Are AWD + DSTC + Snow Tires + Antilock Brakes an adequate substitute to snow chains? I got curious about this, ran a Google search, and came up with a few articles about how snowchains are still used on SUVs (vehicle in question is a Lexus RX 300) in conjunction with these sophisticated systems...

Chains are illegal in most parts of Canada. I can see little or no reason for them if you have AWD plus good snow tires. I just got through heavy snow with only all season tires and AWD last week with not even a slip. With snow tires the performance must be fantastic!

Say, Brian, how's that wind noise you noted with your new car?

Still there. A good reason to crank the radio  . Day to day it is not a problem because I only have about 3 miles to work. Never above 40MPH.
It's a pain on the Hwy. though.

As of now I still have less than 500 miles on the car so it has not been an issue as of yet. If I had a long trip planned I may use my wife's car instead.

With my '99 S70 AWD and Blizzaks, I could motor through anything in Ottawa two years ago.
Even here in Seoul, what little snow we get is nothing for the AWD.
Never be without it again !
