2004 XC70 Haldex AOC filter

Post by bugeye »

2004 XC70 with 99k miles. We have owned 1 year. About a month ago I changed the haldex fluid, ~ 0.5 litre. Grey with particulate. So after the great write up on the XC90 forum, I ordered haldex filters from Tasca for both our XC70 and 2007 S80. The S80 was not too bad to change the filter or the fluid condition which drained from the filter cavity, 72k miles.

This AM I "tried" to change the haldex filter on the XC70. The access is even more difficult on the XC70 due to the harmonic damper (?) hub just in front of the filter cap. I got the filter off. What drained out was dark grey and full of particulate, but no sludge. New filter installed, but then to secure the filter cap, I managed to cross thread the top bolt. Grrrrr. Went real easy, but then nope. Stopped and called garage. I'm done and much frustration as I was very careful. Access is almost impossible. I am going to request the exhaust and driveshaft be removed, then the damper hub. Then the filter cap can be properly accessed and secured with the hopefully few remaining threads. I will request the haldex pump be removed to clean the screen and pump. Also, this is a good time to re-grease the CV joints. Time to open the checkbook. Volvo -> this fluid for life is just wrong. end rant.

Update. Well not cross threaded, just could not access bolt. Removed exhaust, then driveshaft, then damper hub. CV joints checked, good at 99k miles. Haldex pump removed. O rings changed. New haldex oil drained from pump cavity, clean. New haldex filter clean. So, haldex had a good flush/recirculation with new oil for 1000 miles. :D
