Volvo 850 S2 Transmission Shift Solenoid Replacement w/Pics
Many of our transmission problem stem from bad radiators. Once the radiator breaks water leaks into the transmission causing the transmission to shift funny or stop drive altogether. I changed my shift solenoids but no change in performance. I ended up changing the transmission which today for a 850 is around $400 give or take a $100. If you decide to change the transmission be sure to change the pump seal before installing the new transmission. Trust me on this, no fun removing transmission twice.

I know two guys that had close to 500,000km on their auto 850s with just regular fluid changes. I think maybe some of the failures are from lack of fluid changes. Never heard of a solenoid problem with the 4spd. 5sp most definetly.

Any word on if the transpartsdirect.com solenoids are any good?
Also, what size are the torx bolts on the transmission cover?

Another question; The SL solenoid is part # 6843784. S1 and S2 supposedly are the same part number (6843783) but I've heard that S1 and S2 are actually different. Any word on this from those who have replaced these solenoids?

Ordered the SL, S1, & S2 solenoids from transparts. We'll see if S1 & 2 really are the same.

They appear to be the same solenoid with a different mount/bracket and connector position. the mounting bracket and connector position are important, once you get under the cover.

Hmm...where can I get the correct solenoids or how do I modify the incorrect bracket? I wonder why the part numbers are the same in that case.

Let me look for my old receipt.
I don't think there is any way to modify the bracket, it's a pretty tight and precision fit, if I recall correctly. The solenoids replace fairly easily, after you get through everything else you need to loose or remove to get to them...
