96 854na broken tail pipe hanger

Post by eriscentro »

Hey guys, quick question. This weekend I took my 854 on a 1K mile road trip from school to home and back. At home, I did a full oil change and everything seemed all good! When driving back, I noticed that the car sounded strange, but I couldn't put my finger on the noise. It sounded much louder than the car normally does under acceleration. When I revved it in neutral, I heard this rattle noise, and when the revs dropped down, something that sounded like a crackle. Ultimately, when I arrived at school about 500 miles later, I found that my tail pipe hanger was obliterated (see attached), and the pipe had fallen upwards and melted a sizable hole in my bumper. What seems weird to me, and what I'm here to confirm, is that when the tail pipe hanger rusts away, does the pipe fall towards the ground, or up towards the bumper? As of now, it's pressed against the bumper which feels strange to me, and I'm not sure if there's another issue that I'm not seeing.

It might be sagging in the middle. eEuroparts and FCP both sell replacement hangers. The FCP version is real nice and kinda pricey while the eEuroparts version is simpler to install and it is dirt cheap. I go with the latter since I don't really care if the hanger outlasts the rest of the system.
