1997 850 R - Oil Dipstick Tube Rubber/Plastic Broken

Post by Jough »

Hi there. This is my first post here. I spent most of my time on Turbobricks, but they have an obvious RWD focus, so I figured I'd get in here. :)

Recently bought a 1997 854 R. I serviced the PCV system over the weekend (and I have the scrapes to prove it!) and when I removed the oil dipstick tube, the rubber/plastic boot around the tube where it meets the oil pan seems to have given way after years of biodegrading and came out with the tube(not just the little green o-ring). Do all cars have this, or is it maybe someones attempt to seal up the hole without the proper o-ring? Besides leaking more oil, do I have any options here?

Here's a picture of it for reference. Thanks!!

The only non-metal in that junction should be the o-ring. If you clean up the tube, and clean out the port on the block, and get a new o-ring, you're good to go.

Hmmm... maybe it's just a ton of gross oil solids? Ack. Well, I'll give it a go.

What you would recommend to clean the port on the oil pan? Is brake cleaner too harsh? Don't wanna just dump a bunch into the oil if I can avoid it...

Again, thanks. :)

What is in the picture looks a lot like someone squirted RTV on the end and shoved it in the hole. If that is the case the bulk of it came out with the dipstick and any residual can likely be yanked out with a small screwdriver or an awl. The dipstick tube isn't typically a place that sludges up.

I can see 3 black o-rings, which are the wrong o-rings. There should be only one O-ring, in green color -part# 8670310

Personally I would upgrade to the new design dipstick and tube.

If you do change the dipstick and the tube the same part number can come in different lengths. Take the old stuff with you to the parts counter so that they can match them.
