Look at the FCP video on the S60 P2 series. Same tensioner, same method.

Pay attention to time marking 16:05 re mechanical tensioner:




@mecheng,

Since you are a mechanical engineer, you won't have any problems understanding the design of the mechanical tensioner. Basically during install, the adjusting hex key is turned in such a way (the tab moves Clockwise past the "window"), this is to tighten the belt and remove some slack.

Then the tab is moved back to the window (at 20C) to decrease belt tension a tiny bit, so it is "perfect".

My first hunch was correct, the tension setting was wrong. At 20C it was to the right of the window, at the 50C setting. I knew it wasn't the bearing because the noise does not dissipear if it's a bearing. I guess the tension was too high, but not sure why that would cause noise unless it puts too much load on the bearings?

The bolt was very tight so I'm not sure how it moved. It only started making a noise in the last few months. Very weird?

Did you install the tensioner? If it has been to tight for a few months, I would replace it.

No, it came with the car. PO replaced the timing belt with a volvo belt, not sure if tensioner was replaced. The bearing seal is orange

My guess is the P.O. replaced ONLY the TB, leaving the pulleys x2 alone.

If this were my car, I would replace all: TB and pulleys x2. This is sold as a kit at dealer for $120.
Online is "INA kit", same price. So stick to Volvo blue box.

I bought a 30mm socket, I'm going to make sure the timing belts match the notches because I noticed the notches for the intake and exhaust cam are not at the same position. If they don't do I just move one of the cams accordingly, once I ensure the crank is where it should be?

Yep, you got it. And be really confident about the crank mark.

But if it appears to be off by more than one tooth then hesitate before you go making changes; it should run pretty poorly if off by that much.

So the noise came back so I guess something is wrong with the tensioner. I just want to replace the tensioner now because I plan on doing everything when it's due.
Do I just remove the tensioner by removing slack, and then reinstall sure the timing marks stay put?

That should work fine, you don't need to remove the belt.
