2005 Volvo XC90 ETM Cleaned Now Not Running

Post by 2005xc90t »

I cleaned my ETM in my 2005 Volvo XC 90 2.5t. Put everything back. Now it will not run correctly at all. It ran fine before the cleaning aside from a small "surge" that I figured the cleaning would fix. Well, now it won't run. I have a check engine light that flashes when the key is in the 2 ignition position. What the heck did I do wrong here? Thanks guys. :!:

Given that the connector to the ETA is back in place correctly you may have allowed degreaser inside the ETA body which is shorting the outputs to the engine ECU. Also be sure all the connectors on the tubing leading to the throttle body are back in place.

On the bottom of the ETA there are several stainless steel clips which can be pulled to reveal the inner workings. Pull them off and see if the unit is contaminated. If so clean it carefully noting where the grease is located on the contacts. Replace the contacting grease where necessary.

What did you use to clean it with? BTW a new one only requires a code clearing and ignition in PosII to calibrate.

I used choke cleaner, then dried t really good. I did move the "flap" inside before reinstalling to ensure it was all clean. Now as mentioned after I reinstalled everything and started the car it is showing a multiple misfire check engine. The CE flashes when key is turned to the 2 position and once the car is started it is not driveable.

You did use a new gasket and torqued the ETA bolts correctly to the intake, right?

I would double check that the air duct is properly seated and there is no unmetered air getting in before or after the ETM, and then inspect the electrical connector for cleanliness and a possible recessed pin.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Just an update as I finally got it running great now. I had to disconnect the battery and pull the ECM fuse and connect both the positive and negative cables together over night. The next day I reinstalled the etm with a new gasket ensuring everything was properly installed. Replaced fuses and connected battery. Car runs great now.

When my AC was on the car would surge. The etm cleaning corrected this issue and all runs smooth.
