1997 850R Price quote for front right motor mount

Post by koffinb »

I took my car in to my local indy shop for a repair on my front right motor mount and I was quoted $296 parts and labor. Is this a fair deal? I realize the job may be easy but unfortunately I don't have any of the power tools needed or equipment to jack up my engine with. The clunking is really becoming annoying and would like to get it fixed, I just want to make sure I am not getting ripped off.

To do the job at home you will need a jack to pick up the car and another jack to hold up the engine while you remove the mount. Not sure on the price of the mount, but I would venture to guess around $70. $296 seems a bit high. I've done the job twice and both times it took me less than an hour. I would think $150 would be more reasonable and fair. Once you get the car in the air and support the engine all you need are some basic hand tools to finish the job. At that price you would be better off buying a 2 ton jack, a pair of jack stands and some nice hand tools. Check out Harbor Freight if you have one nearby. Good luck.

Gotta agree with shaker here. It was damn near as easy as changing a tire. Nearly $300 is a full-boat rip off. Check the torque mount at the top too.

Like the others who have posted so far, I don't know what the shop rate is for that mount (I assume you mean the front engine mount, under the crank pulley). But it indeed sounds too high for something that is an easy one to DIY. And for $296 they better be putting in a genuine Volvo part.

How does it break down, what fraction is parts and what fraction is labor in the quote?

How did you get the part so fast? What brand mount did you go with? I just replaced mine with a Lemforder

I got a Lemforder mount as well from a euro parts store 10 minutes away. I called them up and told them What i needed..told me they would have it in a couple hours, went there and picked it up for $67 and got a Haynes Manual as well for future repairs.
The place is called BapGeon. It's where I used to go to get all my OE or OEM parts for my BMW. Love them!

It's love hate thing, sometimes you hate it when your trying to get a seized bolt off but you love when the job is done and the feeling of accomplishment.

Word of advice, don't buy cheap Chinese tools for everything. Stuff that you use often get some decent stuff. I like Gray tools, Proto, snap on, lisle. It is worth the investment, you can pass them down to your kids
